Sheffield artist Pete McKee has created a limited edition artwork on 500 tin cans to be given to people who donate food to the S2 Food Bank. Aiming to raise awareness of food banks, the McKee tins will be launched at a pop up store on Division Street. Azz Mohammed reports for Sheffield Live!
School students joined a demonstration in Firth Park to highlight the dangers of air pollution following a report that puts Sheffield among cities that exceed the legal limits. The World Health Organisation has identified 30 areas in the UK where fine-particle air pollution is in excess of ten micrograms per cubic metre. Spearmint Rhino on Brown Street has had its licence renewed by Sheffield Council despite over 150 objections. The lap dancing club has been in operation for over fifteen years despite complaints about the suitability of its location. David Barker, chair of Sheffield Council’s licensing committee said there was no evidence of poor practices at the club. Abdi Jama, a resident of the Hanover Tower in Broomhill, has spoken of his relief of the removal of the tower’s cladding following the Grenfell tragedy. The Hanover Tower is the only one of 24 Sheffield Council-owned tower blocks that failed safety tests carried out in the aftermath of the Grenfell fire in which 72 people died. Thousand of Sheffield Muslims attended the Eid-ul-Fitr prayer gathering at Tesco car park on Saville Street. The Eid celebration marks the end of Ramadan, in which Muslims fast from dawn to dusk and engage in support for charitable causes.
