New £16m sports centre opens in Sheffield

A new £16m sports and health centre has opened in Sheffield on the site of the old Graves Tennis and Leisure Centre in Norton. The refurbished facility renamed Graves Health and Sports Centre includes swimming pools, tennis courts and fitness studios. The centre, run by Places for People Leisure, also houses one of three hubs of the UK’s National Centre for Sport and Exercise Medicine, with sports physiotherapists and doctors based in its consultation and treatment rooms. A gymnastics and trampolining centre at the site remains under construction. Simon Thake reports for Sheffield Live!

Bryony Page returns to hero’s welcome

Olympic trampolining medalist Bryony Page was greeted by fans at the English Institute of Sport in Sheffield on her return from the Rio 2016 Olympics. Page made history with her silver medal, the first ever Olympic medal in trampolining for a British athlete. The Sheffield-based Olympic athlete, who trains at Hillsborough Leisure Centre, narrowly missed out on the gold medal after finishing 0.425 points behind Canada’s Rosannagh MacLennan. Bryony’s delight at Olympic medal success

Sheffield Olympian and silver medal winner Bryony Page contributed to Team GBs record medals tally at Rio 2016 and is the first British woman to win a trampoling medal in the Olympics. Team GB came second place in the Olympics medal table, behind the USA and ahead of China, with 27 gold medals, 23 in silver and 17 in bronze. Bryony first broke into the international spotlight in 2012, winning gold at the World Cup in Sofia. She has since been crowned three times British champion. Paul Greaves, Bryony’s trampolining coach, spoke to Sheffield Live! reporter Shamaan Freeman-Powell.

Bryony Page trampolining team bouncing with delight

Whilst Bryony Page was winning a trampolining silver medal in Rio, her team mates and training partners were cheering her on at Hillsborough Leisure Centre. The Sheffield University Biology Graduate will shortly be rejoining her colleagues when she returns from the 2016 Games. In the meantime her fellow trampolinists are busy training hard to see if they can match her success. Sheffield Live! reporter Simon Thake went along to a session.

Stars of the future cheers on our Jess!

As Jessica Ennis Hill began the defence of her heptathlon title, dozens of young Sheffield athletes cheered on her at the English Institute of Sport right here in Sheffield. The EIS is one of Jess’ main training venues where she has been putting in the hard hours with her coach Tony Minchello. David Bly is the Dry Sports Manager at EIS and he explained why Jess is such a favourite of these youngsters.

It is one year to go before the Special Olympics kicks off in Sheffield

There’s one year to go today before Sheffield host next year’s Special Olympics National Games – which are held every four years. It’s the biggest disability sporting event in the country in 2017, with 2,600 athletes with learning disabilities from across England, Scotland and Wales taking part in 20 different sports. These Games are a chance to make a huge difference to the lives of many inspiring athletes with learning disabilities.

Sheffield golf fans cheer on Danny for Rio glory

Masters Champion Danny Willett will be aiming for gold this Summer as he makes the long trip to Rio. Whilst the Top 4 golfers in the World have all pulled out of the Olympics including Rory Mcllroy, Sheffield born Danny is now in prime position to capitalise. Andy Carnall the Golf General Manager from Sheffield International Venues certainly fancies his chances.
