Two multi-million pound buildings have opened at Sheffield College this term, which aim to boost young people’s employment prospectives in areas such as engineering and the creative industries. The new building, now fully open to students, includes a theatre, recording studios and a new television studio. Principal of The Sheffield College, Heather Smith told Sheffield Live how she felt to have the buildings open.
A new star was unveiled earlier today on the walk of fame outside the Town Hall. A world champion mountain biker Steve Peat joined the likes of Jessica Ennis, Sean Bean and many others on the city’s ‘Hollywood Boulevard-style’ attraction. I went along to interview the Sheffield athlete and the Mayor of Sheffield. Here’s what they had to say.
Around six hundred musicians across thirty events have been performing in Sheffield this weekend for the Classical Sheffield Festival of Music. It’s the first year of the festival which has been organised by Music in the Round, Sheffield Philharmonic Chorus, Sheffield Symphony Orchestra and the University of Sheffield. It aims to promote professional and amateur classical music events to get more people involved in this genre of music.
SLTV first hit your screens on 23 September 2015 so we celebrated with a special edition of Talking Sheffield hosted by Simon Thake in front of a live audience. The guests were Steve Buckley, Chair of SLTV, Sara Hill from Opus Magazine and Lia Nici from Estuary TV.
My first encounter with Game Over was a Facebook invitation.
“Here we go…” I thought, “I can’t wait to decline this!”
I’m quite picky with events I go to, a general rule I follow is – if it’s not gigs, I’m not interested! I don’t even visit the cinema, and as somebody who spends hours alone rejecting social invitations on a regular basis in favour of being at one with my Xbox, I was at first reluctant to go to an event that would require me actually speaking to other human beings (and not down a mic).
Why do I need to go to a bar to play video games when I can just merrily sit here, check my phone (for the texts I’m not going to receive) and eat some custard creams in the comfort of my own crumb riddled bed?
This is why…
I realised almost immediately that Game Over has been the type of social activity I have been looking for. I was lucky to meet some of the nicest people I have ever interacted with and it was genuinely one of the most enjoyable experiences I have had in a long time. There is something quite brilliant about being complimented on your t-shirt because somebody knows it’s actually the vault boy and not TinTin!
What makes this night even better is that you don’t have to be some powernerd who spends all day on COD shouting at four year olds and throwing their controllers at the wall. Nope, this was for anybody who has an interest in anything games related new and old. I sometimes find that myself and others are put off by these events on the basis that there will be some know-it-all fedora wearing guy going around trying to educate people on the history of video games. Every single person I spoke to was down to earth and friendly.
And what better way to make some friends than virtually shooting them in the head?!
Not only can you kick some serious backside on Mario Kart, but you can eat a slice of pepperoni and neck a beer at the same time.
I really struggle to fault this event.

Neil Redfearn was officially announced as Rotherham United manager today, he joins the club on a 2 and a half year deal. He replaces Steve Evans, who left Rotherham last month after more than three years in charge. Redfearn’s first game as Millers boss will be the trip to fellow strugglers Brentford on Saturday the 17th of October. The European Championships, which are taking place in Denmark next week, will be the final major event before the 2016 Paralympic games, where athletes can directly qualify for Rio. Some of the athletes, including men’s class seven world champion Will Bayley, were training at the English Institute of Sport this week.
The law around smoking in cars with children in them changes from Thursday the 1st of October. It will become illegal to smoke in a car when there are passengers under eighteen present. The law change coincides with Stoptober, a campaign that’s been running over the last few years to encourage people to give up smoking for twenty eight days.
