A Sheffield couple who watched, in the 1950s, the proclamation ceremony of Queen Elizabeth II on a black and white television, have spoken of their delight to witness South Yorkshire’s proclamation of the new King. Speaking to Sheffield Live! Allan and Hilda Wisbey, both in their 90s, said it was important to bed able to witness South Yorkshire’s declaration of King Charles III ascension to the throne.
Over three hundred people gathered at Sheffield City Hall on Sunday to witness South Yorkshire’s proclamation ceremony for the ascension to the throne of King Charles III. The ceremony was conducted by South Yorkshire’s High Sheriff who was joined by the Lord-Lieutenant, MPs, councillors and members of the public. Baillor Jalloh reports for Sheffield Live!
Speaking to Sheffield Live! Lord Mayor of Sheffield councillor Sian-Mair Richards said: “I think the Queen has been pretty magnificent for the last 70 years, her duty, her service to the country. She just got on with things.” Baillor Jalloh reports.
Over two dozen people gathered at Sheffield City Hall at the weekend to mark the 49th anniversary of the military coup in Chile that left many dead or disappeared and forced thousands to leave the country. The 1973 coup led by Augusto Pinochet ousted the popular unity government of President Salvador Allende and replaced it wth a military junta which ruled for 15 years. The Lord Mayor of Sheffield Sioned-Mair Richards said: “On behalf of the City Council and the people of Sheffield I want to express our great sadness at the news of the death of Her Majesty, Queen Elizabeth today. Our sincere condolences go to members of the Royal Family at this time of sadness and personal loss. Her reign will be acknowledged in history as one of the greatest of all monarchs and, through years of major challenges and difficulties for the country, she retained a true sense of dignity throughout.
“I recall the enthusiastic welcome given by the people of Sheffield when the late Queen visited the city in April 2015. It will be an event that many will remember for the rest of their lives and will always be a significant day in Sheffield’s history.
As a mark of respect, flags are to be flown at half-mast on civic buildings. Books of Condolence will also be opened in Sheffield and Stocksbridge Town Halls from 9am to 6pm, Monday to Friday until the day after the funeral. There will also be an eBook of Condolence on the City Council’s website and the Royal website at royal.gov.uk.
Floral tributes may be laid in a specially designated area of the Peace Gardens in the city centre.
Britain’s longest-reigning monarch has died, aged 96.
Her eldest son, now King Charles III, said: “The death of my beloved mother, Her Majesty The Queen, is a moment of the greatest sadness for me and all members of my family”.
A trial scheme to increase the amount of food waste recycled in Sheffield has started this week with over 8000 households taking part in the 12-week scheme. Sheffield Council say the aim is to reduce the amount of food waste ending up in black bins. Sheffield pub owner, Jacqui Hanson, is among many calling on the government to do more to support pub businesses at risk of going out of business in the face of soaring energy prices. Hanson, owner, of the Rose House pub in Walkley, told Sheffield Live! that electricity bills have already risen sharply and she doubted the business can survive without government support. Jake Rideout of Sheffield has won this years Peak District Highland Games after a fierce competition at the weekend event held in Matlock. The games featured seasoned competitors including two times previous Peak District Highland Games champion, Scott Mark Litchfield. Rideout went into the competition having previously won Yorkshire’s Strongest Man in 2021. Baillor Jalloh reports.
