Dozens of Guineans from Sheffield joined others in a demonstration at the Foreign Office in London calling for support to stop the killings of unarmed civilians by Guinean security forces. Dozens have joined a rally outside the Sheffield Town Hall to show support for migrants and refugees and the right to freedom of movement. The rally under the banners “Don’t scrap freedom of movement” and “Migrants are welcome in Sheffield,” comes following publication of government plans for post Brexit immigration controls. The Help Us Help campaign to tackle begging and support the homeless has been launched this week backed by local businesses and support organisations. More than 20 local businesses, including John Lewis, Virgin Money and McDonalds, have joined the campaign to help vulnerable people on the street with advice to the public and a call for donations of clothing and other goods. There are more than 5,000 people homeless in Yorkshire, an increase of 600 since 2017, according to a new report by the homelessness charity Shelter. Sheffield councillor Jim Steinke, cabinet member for neighbourhood and community safety, told Sheffield Live! there has been an increase in homelessness in Sheffield but the Council is doing more to tackle the problem. Nationally, according to Shelter, 32,000 people are living in temporary accommodation or sleeping rough.
Legendary folk singer Roy Bailey passed away peacefully on Tuesday, aged 83. He played to sell out concerts and festivals around the world for over 50 years. Roy was formerly Dean of Faculty of Education, Health and Welfare at what is now Sheffield Hallam University and he was appointed professor in 1989. He chose to make Sheffield his home and to many he was the voice of the people, as he sang songs about working lives and socialism.
As part of Restorative Justice Week, victims of crime are being supported to meet their offenders to discuss the impact of the crime and repair the harm. Restorative justice schemes are designed to offer victims the chance to be heard, to get answers to questions and to provide a sense of closure. Baillor Jalloh reports for Sheffield Live!
The GB men’s wheelchair basketball team have been inducted into the Hall of Champions at the English Institute of Sport in recognition of their 2018 World Championships win in Hamburg. The team profile joins the likes of Anthony Joshua and Jessica Ennis in the Hall of Champions gallery. Its the first time the team has won the World Championship trophy and they are one of the youngest teams in the world with an average age of 27.
