Esports students graduate from Barnsley College

The first cohort of students graduating from Barnsley’s new Esports Level 3 qualification (equivalent to one A Level) have received their results. The college is one of the trailblazing schools to teach the new Esports course and has developed a suite of facilities including an Esports arena and tailored classroom. Sheffield Live! reporter Baillor Jalloh spoke to Layton Ripley, one of the first students to graduate in Esports, and Kalam Neale, leader of the course at Barnsley College.

Hundreds join train strike rally

Hundreds of people took part in a weekend rally in Sheffield city centre, to stand in solidarity with rail workers. The rally, organised by the National Union of Rail, Maritime and Transport Workers (RMT), aimed at highlighting the ongoing dispute between rail workers and employer, Network Rail. On Thursday and Saturday, half of UK’s train services were on halt as over 45,000 train employees walked out in the row over pay, jobs and conditions. Baillor Jalloh reports for Sheffield Live!

Early support for children hit by council spending cuts

A new report has revealed more vulnerable children than ever need crisis support as local authorities cut spending on services which help prevent them coming to harm. According to the report, investment in early intervention support by councils in England fell from £3.8bn to £1.9bn (50%) between 2010/11 and 2020/21. The report was commissioned by The Children’s Society, Action for Children, Barnardo’s, National Children’s Bureau and the NSPCC. Heatwave breaks records in Sheffield and across the UK

South Yorkshire and other parts of the UK recorded temperatures of over 40C (104F) for the first time since records began. Thermometers hit 40.3C in many parts of South Yorkshire, well above the previous high of 38.7C in 2019. Sheffield’s Supertram network was shut for the day due to the extreme heat conditions. Race equality commission calls for action to tackle racism

The report of the Independent Commission into Racism and Racial Disparities in Sheffield sets out a series of recommendations and actions for Sheffield to become an anti-racist city. The report of the commission follows two years of consultations, addressing a wide range of issues and calls for key organisations in Sheffield to come together around a comprehensive plan of action. Sheffield Councillor: Tory leadership needs fresh ideas

Lewis Chinchen, the Conservative Councillor for Stocksbridge and Upper Don has told Sheffield Live! his party needs a fresh start. His comments comes as candidates hoping to replace Boris Johnson as the next leader of the Tory party and Prime Minster of the UK unveil their plans. Meanwhile, the chair of the 1922 Committee, Sir Graham Brady has announced that eight contenders will go into the first round of voting by Conservative MPs – Kemi Badenoch, Suella Braverman, Jeremy Hunt, Penny Mordaunt, Rishi Sunak, Liz Truss, Tom Tugendhat and Nadhim Zahawi. Sheffield Muslims celebrate Eid al-Adha

Muslim communities across South Yorkshire took part in the celebration of Eid al-Adha over the weekend. The festival is marked by special prayers and feasts and follows Eid al-Fitr which marks the end of Ramadan, the Muslim holy month of fasting. In Sheffield prayers were performed in parks and mosques across the city. Wahid Nazir, a committee member at Ghausia Mosque on Firth Park Road, spoke to Sheffield Live! reporter Baillor Jalloh.
