Concern grows among those with family in Sudan

Sudanese residents in Sheffield are desperately worried about their families back home as tensions grow amid a ceasefire between the two rival military factions. Abdel Khalig Elmannan told Sheffield Live! his family left Khartoum on Wednesday to a “safe place” near the Egyptian border. The first flight carrying British citizens out of Sudan departed on Wednesday. The British government is still urging UK passport holders to make their own way to the airport as the rescue mission continues. Baillor Jalloh reports for Sheffield Live!

Sudanese community pledge support for civilian rule

Sudanese residents in Sheffield have pledge their solidarity with protesters in Khartoum as they call on military leaders now running Sudan to hand over to a civilian-led transitional government. On Monday the African Union urged Sudan’s military junta to transfer power to a civilian-led political authority or face suspension from the AU. Earlier this years hundreds of Sudanese from across South Yorkshire marched through Sheffield demanding the resignation of Omar Al-Bashir. Sudan protestors rally for change

Hundreds of people from Sheffield’s Sudanese community took part in a march and rally at the weekend in solidarity with protests in Khartoum and other parts of Sudan against Omar al-Bashir’s government. The Sheffield protest was one of many across the UK aiming to raise awareness of conditions in Sudan and calling for a change of government after 30 years rule by the incumbent president.
