Cornucopia Halloween Special

Have you ever felt the hairs on the back of your neck stand up, the chills going up your spine until you feel like you have to shake this feeling off your back? No matter how silly it feels?

Or how about those times when you feel like someone is looking over your shoulder? So much so, that you can almost feel someone breathing down your neck?

Listening to this ‘Cornucopia Halloween’ special (broadcast as part of our annual allnight weirdathon), as you are right now; alone in a darkened room, the disturbing feelings become stronger than ever and so intense that you feel the need to keep looking behind you; just to reassure yourself that you’re still alone.

Nick Clegg’s latest visit to Sheffield attracted the kind of attention politicians shy away from.

On September 3, trade unionists and campaigners gathered outside the Town Hall to protest public spending cuts and remind Clegg of the promises he had made before the general elections. The protest was organised to coincide with the launching ceremony of Opportunity Sheffield, where Nick Clegg was the guest speaker.

On his arrival at the Town Hall, Clegg was greeted with the chants of ‘Judas’, a reception quite different from the one he got at Barker’s Pool just a few months back.

Speaking to Sheffield Live! the Hallam MP answered questions about Forgemasters loan, his constituency home and the charge that he has betrayed Sheffield.

Darnall Post Office – local community in action

While the big society initiative may still be limited to speeches made by Prime Minister David Cameron, a Sheffield neighbourhood has already put it to test. Darnall Forum, a Darnall based charity rescued their local post office with the help of the Sheffield City Council. The community-run post office will be inaugurated on Tuesday, August 21. The post office was one of 65 in South Yorkshire, Derbyshire, Huddersfield and Colne Valley selected for closure by Post Office Ltd in 2008.

Sheffield Live! reporter Nick Mosley chats with Rob Russell, manager of the Darnall Post Office about this unique initiative, the effort that went into it and what it means for the local community.

The Poetry Show

On the 29th of March, a talented bunch of writers from across the UK got together to present and perform a new radio show featuring a unique collection of live poetry and music. The show was recorded ‘as live‘ at ‘The Red House’ pub on Solly street and produced by wordsandthings.co.uk in association with Sheffieldlive!

This evening was conceived by the ‘Bard of Broomhill’ otherwise known as Ruth Grimsley, who presented her unique and unmissable readings along with co-host Paul Amber.

The show also featured amazing performances by Richard Faulkner, Mr & Mrs Mills, Graham Stevens, Rex Davies, Anxious Andrews and Sue Wallis

Our General Election Coverage 2010

The UK general election was held on the 6th of May 2010 and turned out to be one of the most tightly fought and important this country has seen in generations. Although the Conservatives won the largest number of votes and seats, they still fell short of the 326 seats needed to have an overall majority. The first time this has happened since 1974 and only the second time since the ‘Second World War’ that a UK general election has returned a hung parliament.

Regeneration in Burngreave: A Special Radio Series


Conceived in 1998 by the Labour government, New Deal for Communities (NDC) was a scheme aiming to bring about community-led regeneration in the most deprived neighbourhoods of the UK. The Burngreave neighbourhood in Sheffield was identified as one of those areas and has been awarded £52 million, to be spent over a ten year period from 2001 to 2011. Burngreave NDC received extensive coverage in the local press when it announced that its coffers were close to running dry two years earlier than planned. A very controversial subject, the funding crisis overshadowed the work that had (or hadn’t) been done so far.

This seven part series, produced from May to September 2009 by *Eirini Apostolidou, aims to portray the change in Burngreave from the 90s onwards, and to trace the effect of NDC on the local community. Open Call for Programme Proposals

Have you got an idea that you would like to turn into a radio programme for broadcast on community radio? Is there something you would like to hear on the Sheffield airwaves? This could be your chance to make it happen! Sheffield Live! has launched its latest open call for programme proposals.

Sheffield Live! provides public access to production and broadcast facilities supported by experienced media trainers, mentors and producers. We are particularly interested in new ideas for speech based programmes including current affairs, specialist themes like environment and health, new writing, arts and culture. We welcome proposals to serve particular communities of interest in our coverage area, including programmes in community languages. We encourage innovative ideas including experimental uses of sound and radio.

Sheffield Live! prides itself on being first for Sheffield music with programmes by some of Sheffield’s leading local DJs and a high profile for local music and musicians. If you have an idea for a specialist music programme, let us know. We will be reviewing and renewing our music mix and there will be opportunities across the schedule for new talent to join our music programming roster.

There are many others ways you can get involved, for example by joining our morning or midday production teams as a researcher, reporter, presenter, producer or technical operator. Training will be provided for all new programme volunteers with an opportunity to learn media production skills and gain practical experience in a working broadcast environment. An Open Letter To Gordon Brown

The 20th July marked the fifth anniversary of the legislation that enabled Sheffield Live and other community radio stations to start broadcasting. Since then more than 200 community radio services have been licensed and around 150 are on air, creating around 400 jobs, involving over 10,000 volunteers, and serving a potential audience of more than 10 million people. Ofcom’s latest Annual Report hailed community radio as “one of the great UK broadcasting success stories of the last few years”, but that success could turn to failure if much needed Government support is not forthcoming, according to community radio groups and their supporters.

The Community Radio Fund is described by Steve Buckley, Director of Sheffield Live! 93.2FM as “.. woefully inadequate”. Steve says the new sector is in a precarious situation: “To put it in context, the money available today through the Community Radio Fund to support the operating costs of 150 community radio stations is less than the annual salary of a BBC Radio 1 breakfast DJ.”

An open letter has been written to the Prime Minister, Gordon Brown, signed by 82 community radio leaders, media scholars and experts including representatives of 60 community radio stations, in a bid to raise awareness of the threat to community radio.

Love Lord of the Rings?

The Hunt for Gollum is a 40 minute fan film, inspired by the appendices of JRR Tolkein’s classic trilogy, ‘The Lord of the Rings’.

The film tells the tale of Aragorn as he searches for Gollum, after Gandalf realizes that someone else knows the whereabouts of the ‘one ring’.

Chris Bouchard, the writer-director, assembled a team of dedicated cast and crew and began filming around Wales and Epping Forest. In the process creating an epic 40 minute film which had a total budget of around £3,000 (compared with £190million spent making the three The Lord Of The Rings films). The movie recently had its world premiere at the Sci-Fi Film Festival in London and played to universal praise.
