South Yorkshire Fire and Rescue Services have tested their capability to respond to a major blaze as part of a service-wide exercise. Dozens of emergency services vehicles lined up outside the former Prince Edward Primary School on Queen Mary Road. The operation, involving more than 60 on duty firefighters and 10 standard fire engines, was the biggest training session of the year. Shamaan Freeman-Powell spoke to Assistant Chief Fire Officer Martin Blunden.

Clegg reflects on politics and power

Former Deputy Prime Minister Nick Clegg has published a new book, ‘Politics: Between the Extremes’. It is a frank account of his experience in politics, power and the 2015 General Election defeat. The Sheffield Hallam MP argues that with the resurgence of nationalism and mainstream parties in turmoil, new divisions define the country that are no longer simply left and right. Sheffield Live! reporter Baillor Jalloh spoke to Nick Clegg at the launch of this year’s Off the Shelf Festival of Words at Sheffield Hallam University.

New piglets at Heeley City Farm

A Sheffield farm has become the new home to seven piglets.

They are a rare breed and have been attracting much attention from the visitors.

Heeley City Farm has been targeted by youths over the years. In April there were five break ins over five nights.

They broke into the cash office, but after finding little money lying around, they caused deliberate damage to the farm.

Now the volunteers are concerned for the safety of the animals.

Kathryn Smiles has been to Heeley City Farm to meet the new arrivals.

Cornucopia Live: The Performances!

.

Well, we did it! On Saturday the 30th of October, as part of the ‘Off the Shelf’ festival, the ‘Cornucopia Radio Show’ was broadcast live from the Sheffield Winter Gardens, for 6 hours between 11am and 5pm.

The day featured poets, storytellers, comedians, performers, actors, musicians, singers and local amateur dramatic groups. Yes, it was a little chaotic (let there be no doubt about that!) but it was also pretty amazing, because amazing is the thing we do best!

Rave Against Racism at the The Corporation

On Sunday the 24th of May, a special “Rave Against Racism” three stage event will be taking place at “The Corporation” here in Sheffield, with a headline set from The Orb.

All proceeds from the event will be going to straight to Sheffield Live! helping us to continue providing a an eclectic mix of original programming by local people of all ages, cultures and backgrounds.

Rave Against Racism is a non-profit organisation that raises awareness around the issues surrounding the far-right and supports community groups and individuals around the world. It was set up in January 2009 to help and support promoters, clubbers and ravers in the ongoing fight against the far right in the UK, Europe and the rest of the world. The people involved have a long history of free parties, being promoters or punters and an interest in anti far-right politics and activism. We want to help support people who may well be turned off by mainstream politics to get involved in the local community groups that are in their area and if needs, help them setting up their own groups. Our primary focus is Anti Fascism and raising awareness and having a damn good time whilst doing so. We want to encourage people to meet and mix and share ideas and ideals whether online or out in the real world.

The bands take to the stage from 9pm and the event runs till 4am. Tickets are priced at £12 and can be purchased online through the Corporation website.

In just one year Sheffield Live! 93.2fm has made its mark on the UK’s fourth largest city by introducing a new brand of radio that celebrates Sheffield’s rich diversity.  With a strong commitment to local people, issues, music and culture the station has created a truly inclusive soundscape of modern day Sheffield, broadcast everyday on FM to a potential audience of 350,000 people.

Sheffield City Council Leader and regular Sheffield Live! listener Paul Scriven said: “It gives me great pleasure to congratulate Sheffield Live! on its first year of fulltime broadcasting.  The station has made a positive impact on the city’s cultural life, by offering a powerful platform to local people for debate, political engagement, creative expression and community celebration.”

A wide range of Sheffield Live’s programmes have become household names like the ‘Indie Hour’ which features tracks from the now legendary Sheffield Indie scene.  ‘Sheffield in Focus’, a magazine programme for local visually impaired people is produced and presented by a seasoned team of broadcasters who are themselves visually impaired.  Produced and presented by two of the city’s top scientists ‘The Sound of Science’ is a world class science, engineering and technology programme, delivered in an accessible and entertaining format.  ‘Sabrang’, a discussion programme in Urdu has a vibrant phone-in that gets the community talking every week whilst ‘Siteen Daqiqa be Alarabi’ and ‘Luisheng Sheffield’ provide Sheffield’s only radio programmes in Arabic, Cantonese and Mandarin.  In addition the station hosts a wide variety of youth orientated, cutting edge music programmes featuring Alternative, RnB, Hip Hop, House and Baseline, presented by some of Sheffield’s best known club DJs.

Sangita Basudev, Chief Executive of Sheffield Live! said: “We are one year old! What a great opportunity to celebrate the hard work, commitment and creative enthusiasm of the 100’s of volunteers that are Sheffield Live! 93.2fm.  Sheffield Live! provides a high quality, eclectic service 24 hours a day.  We take pride in the creative input the station has made to Sheffield and the investment we have made in a new generation of home grown broadcasters of all ages, backgrounds and abilities.”
