Businesses count the cost after flood inundation

Businesses hit by the recent flood disaster are counting the costs of repair and replacement as clean up operations continue in flood hit areas. Sheffield Live! spoke to Mark Akid, director of DM Audio, whose sound systems hire business has been left with thousands of pounds worth of damage. Government grants of up to £5,000 have been promised for flood hit businesses but for some the losses are likely to be much greater. Azz Mohammed reports.

Flood victims forced to evacuate homes

Flood hit residents in Doncaster have been forced to abandon homes with waist high flooding continuing for almost a week in Fishlake and other areas. Heavy rainfall hit parts of the UK last week and flooding remains widespread with further rains expected. Residents say they were not warned of the dangers to come which led to many to evacuate their homes. Azz Mohammed reports for Sheffield Live!

Army to assist flood relief in Doncaster

Following the decision to call in the army to support flood hit communities, the Prime Minister Boris Johnson visited Stainforth in Doncaster where residents have been among the worst hit. His visit was snubbed by many due to arriving late at the scene and not providing help sooner for those in need. Johnson visited the Fishlake area where some residents have been forced to abandon their homes. Around 100 army personnel and staff from the Environment Agency have been called in to support the flood relief effort. Sheffield Live! reporter Azz Mohammed spoke to Phill Bedford, a member of Stainforth Town Council.

Sheffield hit by worst floods since 2007

Sheffield experienced one of the wettest days on record as heavy rainfall caused disruption in the city. Floods across South Yorkshire created chaos with 64mm of rain in Sheffield in 24 hours, the equivalent of a normal month’s precipitation. The incident brought memories of the 2007 floods in which two people lost their lives and extensive damage was caused to homes and businesses. South Yorkshire Fire and Rescue have responded to over 1200 weather calls and rescued over 120 people. Azz Mohammed reports for Sheffield Live!

Chapeltown flood defences to be upgraded

Work has commenced on flood protection works in Falding Street, Chapeltown as part of a wider £83m project to renew and upgrade Sheffield flood defences. Several terraced homes in the area have been subjected to serious flooding in recent years, due to a large culvert watercourse beneath the railway which has been unable to cope with demand during after heavy rainfall. Plaque unveiled for 2007 Sheffield floods anniversary

A plaque has been unveiled at Riverside Park on Nursery Street to mark the 10th anniversary of the Sheffield Flood of 2007. Ten years ago, on 25 June 2017, heavy rain caused devastating floods in Sheffield and other parts of the region, leaving two people dead and causing an estimated £1 billion of damage. Torrential rain causes flooding across Sheffield

Over 150 roads have been affected by flooding in South Yorkshire after the torrential downpour on Monday. There have been reports of abandoned cars south of Sheffield and many commuters were affected by cancelled rail services and traffic gridlock. The Sheffield ‘Streets Ahead’ team were despatched across the city unblocking drains and clearing debris build ups. Lib Dems appeal for natural flood defences in Sheffield

The Liberal Democrats have criticised the governments National Flood Resilience Review and called for more natural measures to prevent flooding. Former Lib Dem leader and Hallamshire MP Nick Clegg called on Sheffield Council to review Sheffield’s flood defence system including risks to areas in Rivelin Valley and Gillyfield Wood in Totley.
