Sheffield asylum seeker fears deportation

An asylum seeker who has lived in Sheffield for more than 16 years told Sheffield Live! she is now afraid to report for an immigration interview. Marian Max, who is originally from Zimbabwe, spoke of her fears of arrest and deportation after three of her compatriots were detained by the UK border agency in cooperation with Zimbabwean government officials. School students strike for climate action

School students from Sheffield and across the UK have joined a youth campaign calling for more to be done to tackle climate change. The Youth Strike for Climate is part of a global movement known as Schools 4 Climate Action. Sheffield Live! reporter spoke to Green Party activist Paul Turpin.

Ticketing site launches charity partnership

A ticketing website has launched an initiative to provide free access to events through selected charities and community groups. Tickets for Good plans to give away tickets to a range of music events and performances to enable those facing barriers of isolation and affordability to benefit. Olivia Blake seeks to retain Sheffield Hallam for Labour

Deputy Leader of Sheffield Council, Olivia Blake spoke to Sheffield Live! following her campaign launch as prospective parliamentary candidate for Sheffield Hallam. Councillor Blake was announced in December as Labour’s choice to stand in the constituency at the next General Election. The seat is currently held by Jared O’Mara, who won for Labour by ousting former Deputy Prime Minister and Lib Dem leader Nick Clegg in May 2017. Baillor Jalloh reports for Sheffield Live!

Deportation fears for Zimbabwean asylum seeker

A campaign has been launched to stop the deportation to Zimbabwe of asylum seeker Victor Mujakachi who has lived in Sheffield for 16 years. More than 7000 people have signed the “Free Victor Mujakachi” petition since his detention at Sheffield’s Vulcan House immigration reporting centre on Monday. Supporters say there are fears for his life if he is forced to return as he has been a prominent critic of the Zimbabwean goverment. Baillor Jalloh reports for Sheffield Live!

Sheffield team distribute aid in Calais

A delegation from Sheffield’s Stand Up To Racism campaign have returned from Calais after delivering aid to destitute refugees. The aid workers, including city councillor Zahira Naz, distributed warm clothing and other donated items. Baillor Jalloh reports for Sheffield Live!

Rotherham student wins BBC journalism competition

A forensic science student from Rotherham has landed her dream journalism job after winning an open audition to become a new BBC Radio Sheffield presenter. Sile Sibanda from Rawmarsh, was announced as the winner of the “This Is Me” competition, after being whittled down from over 150 entrants aspiring to become a radio star.
