Sheffield to host breakdancing competition

A national breakdancing competition is set to return to Sheffield, organised by students from the city’s two universities. Break the System Volume 2 takes place on 4 May at The Hubs building and reflects growing interest in the sport since its consideration for the 2024 Paris Olympics. Digital firm plans Sheffield growth

Data security firm Egress has opened a second office in Sheffield at the city’s digital campus with plans to create 30 new jobs by the end of 2019. The company currently employs 70 staff at its existing Sheffield office. Baillor Jalloh reports for Sheffield Live!

Amateur Cahill stuns world number one in Crucible opener

Ronnie O’Sullivan has been knocked out of the World Snooker Championship by amateur player James Cahill. The 23 year-old from Blackpool is the first non-professional player to qualify for the Crucible and he beat the world number one by 10 frames to 8. Sheffield charity helps refugees to integrate

A new partnership between six charity organisation and Sheffield Council is underway to support refugees granted status to stay in the UK. Sheffield Project for Refugee Integration and Growth (SPRING) is a European funded initiative to enable refugees to meet their potential and integrate into the local community. Sudanese community pledge support for civilian rule

Sudanese residents in Sheffield have pledge their solidarity with protesters in Khartoum as they call on military leaders now running Sudan to hand over to a civilian-led transitional government. On Monday the African Union urged Sudan’s military junta to transfer power to a civilian-led political authority or face suspension from the AU. Earlier this years hundreds of Sudanese from across South Yorkshire marched through Sheffield demanding the resignation of Omar Al-Bashir. Bashir was president of the country for 30 years until his sudden resignation last week. Baillor Jalloh reports for Sheffield Live!

Somali TV channel opens Sheffield studio

International TV channel Eryal TV, based in Somaliland, has launched a multi-media hub in Sheffield to support young Somalians and others to get into the media industry. The studio is hosted by the Somali Community Centre on Cemetery Road and has benefited from the support of Sheffield Hallam University. Baillor Jalloh reports for Sheffield Live!

Drone design wins Space Agency booster

A team of medical students, supported by Sheffield’s Advance Manufacturing Research Centre, have won UK Space Agency funding to develop a drone to deliver emergency medical supplies to remote areas. The AMRC Design and Prototyping Group were asked to create a series of concept designs to illustrate the drone’s potential. Sheffield Live! reporter Azz Mohammed spoke to Samuel Rees, senior project engineer at the AMRC Design and Prototyping Group.

Charities join efforts to tackle rough sleeping

Charities in Sheffield have pledged to join efforts with Sheffield Council to tackle rough sleeping following confirmation of a £400,000 grant for the city through the government’s Rough Sleeping Initiative. The funding is to support initiatives to assist people off the streets and into accommodation and support. Speaking to Sheffield Live! Wayne Hayle, director of St Wilfrid’s Centre, said the investment will have a major impact. Baillor Jalloh reports.
