Sheffield scientists pioneer new method for managing radioactive waste

As World Science Day for Peace and Development highlights science in society, Sheffield Live! investigates new developments in nuclear waste storage. Neil Hyatt, professor of Material Science and Engineering at the University of Sheffield and a recognised authority on radioactive waste management is leading a team developing a new kind of cement to store radio active waste. Azz Mohammed reports.

Chapel re-opened to public at Sheffield General Cemetery

The 19th Century Nonconformist Chapel at the heart of Sheffield General Cemetery has been re-opened to the public after fifty years of dereliction. The listed building has been part of a restoration project managed by Sheffield General Cemetery Trust and aided by grant funding and voluntary work. As a result of the restoration the building has been taken off the national heritage at risk register. Community sports opportunities “reduce anti-social behaviour”

Community sports activities in Sharrow have led to reduced anti-social behaviour according to Wajid Nazir of Sharrow’s One Nation Community Centre. A year ago bonfire night in the Sharrow neighbourhood was marred by violence as local youth hurled fireworks and stones at cars and police but this year’s events went off without incident. Sheffield City Region selected to host Horasis China 2017 conference

Sheffield City Region has been confirmed as host of Horasis China 2017, an international economic summit bringing together Chinese business leaders and their global counterparts. Senior delegates from business and government will be in Sheffield in November 2017 to debate strategies that will shape the global economy and forge new approaches to pressing social, economic, and geopolitical challenges. Volunteers organise to support Tent City homeless

Sheffield’s ‘Tent City’, set up outside Park Hill flats to assist some of the local homeless, has been benefiting from donations and support from the general public. Appeals launched on social media have encouraged people to bring food, clothes, medical supplies and bedding. Sheffield Live! reporter Simon Thake spoke with a mother and daughter volunteering team.

£300m new leisure development planned for Meadowhall

British Land the joint owner of Meadowhall in Sheffield, has submitted a detailed planning application to Sheffield City Council for a £300 million Meadowhall Leisure Hall. The proposed extension is billed as the next phase of Meadowhall’s evolution and will follow a £60 million refurbishment due to complete at the end of 2017. The extension comprises a 330,000 square feet multi-level extension housed under a glazed roof, offering dining and entertainment as well as internal and external spaces for events and community use. Biomass power station on Tinsley Towers site wins design award

Blackburn Meadows power station on the former Tinsley Towers site was recognised with Best Building Award at Sheffield Design Awards. The EON biomass power station became fully operational in 2014. The new renewable energy plant produces enough power for around 40,000 homes using recycled wood as its fuel source. It is also combined heat and power ready with the potential to provide residual heating for surrounding businesses. The first power station on the site was built in 1921 by the Sheffield Corporation and its iconic cooling towers were a prominent part of the landscape until the last of these were demolished in 2008. At nearly 40 metres high, the new buildings alongside the A1 are a significant addition to the Don Valley landscape. Sheffield shop owners plan for city to come ‘alive after five’

Shops and stalls in Sheffield city centre will be open late on Thursday night as part of the recently launched ‘alive after five’ campaign. The evening opening aims to boost footfall in the quiet period after work and before the night time economy takes off. The campaign, now in its third week, was launched by the Business Improvement District. Sheffield Live! reporter Simon Thake spoke to BID Manager Diane Jarvis.

Roundabout opens refurbished flats for young people

The Sheffield homelessness charity, Roundabout, have opened their ‘Number 11’ refurbished flats at the charities hostel on St Barnabas Road. The ribbon was cut by Sheffield Lord Mayor, Councillor Denis Fox together with a young resident of the flats. Number 11 consists of five self-contained flats with eight bedrooms, next door to the main hostel. The charity provides emergency and medium-stay accommodation for homeless single young people, aged 16 to 21.
