Campaigners from Sheffield for Europe have welcomed the government’s promise to allow MPs a vote to delay departure from the European Union or rule out a no-deal Brexit, if Parliament rejects the Prime Minister’s deal for a second time. Mary Seneviratne, a People’s Vote campaigner told Sheffield Live! the government is “moving in the right direction.” Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn has said his party will support a second referendum if his proposed Brexit deal is defeated. A petition has been launched called for better security on trams after incidents of vandalism and attacks on drivers in the Gleadless Valley area. The petition by local resident James Wilson calls on Supertram operator Stagecoach and South Yorkshire Police to address the problem of anti-social behaviour on the trams. A flotilla of canal boats at Victoria Quays was among the sights to recall the two hundredth anniversary of the opening of the Sheffield and Tinsley Canal. The first journeys on the 3.9 km canal in 1819, carrying coal from Tinsley to the canal basin, were witnessed by over 60,000 people. Thousands lined the tow path for the bicentary celebrations. A new contemporary art exhibition at the Sidney and Matilda gallery, Sidney Street, offers an eclectic take on climate vulnerabilities and changing landscapes. Illustrator Dave Draws, known for his doodle maps, has brought his pen to the walls of Meadowhall to sketch two giant murals of local landmarks. The murals are on display for two weeks and feature well known locations from Sheffield and South Yorkshire. Baillor Jalloh reports for Sheffield Live!
Victor Mujakachi, who was detained and set for deportation to Zimbabwe, has been given a three month reprieve following a public campaign. His solicitor has been invited to submit a fresh application for asylum with a decision to be made in three months time. Mujakachi, who has lived in the UK for over 16 years, told Sheffield Live! he has been overwhelmed at the public support he has received. Azz Mohammed reports.
A permanent flagpole carrying the United States flag has been unveiled at Endcliffe Park close to the memorial of the 1944 Mi Amigo plane crash. Returning damaged from a WW2 mission the US bomber crashed into woodlands killing all 10 crew on board and narrowly avoiding a group of schoolchildren.
