Sheffield Council has been told it will not be eligible to borrow additional funding to invest in social housing after having its application to a government scheme rejected. Councillor Jim Steinke, cabinet member for neighbourhoods and community safety, said the rejection is based on old data and the Council is seeking to challenge the assessment. More than a dozen tree campaigners mounted a demonstration outside Sheffield Crown Court as hearings began on a Sheffield Council application for an injunction to restrict tree-felling protests. Thousands of trees have already been felled across the city as part of Council’s 25 year, £2bn Streets Ahead project. The Council says only trees that are diseased, damaging or dangerous are being felled but campaigners say many healthy trees have been removed. Baillor Jalloh reports for Sheffield Live!
Sheffield Supertram drivers and conductors have staged a 24 hour walkouts after rejecting a revised three-year pay offer. Unite members are seeking a pay increase of up to 50p an hour and further strikes are planned after the union rejected an offer they same amounts to around 25p an hour. Sheffield council have sent letters to fourteen people, including Nether Edge and Sharrow councillor Alison Teal, threatening a further injunction to prevent tree felling protests. Abdi Jama, a resident of the Hanover Tower in Broomhill, has spoken of his relief of the removal of the tower’s cladding following the Grenfell tragedy. The Hanover Tower is the only one of 24 Sheffield Council-owned tower blocks that failed safety tests carried out in the aftermath of the Grenfell fire in which 72 people died.
