SheffEX: film and radio interviews

The inaugural SheffEX business exhibition took place on Monday 3rd June at Ponds Forge, designed “as a place to do business by Sheffield City Region businesses people for Sheffield City Region businesses people.”

And it was a great success – with exhibition stands sold out, over 1000 delegates, and, in the words of co-organiser Tony Carroll, the venue “absolutely buzzing with people making contacts, doing deals and forming new partnerships.”

Sheffield Live interviewed Tony Carroll on our Business Live radio programme on Friday 2nd May to talk about the plans for the event.

Major Boost For Sheffield’s New Retail Quarter

A long-awaited city centre regeneration scheme looks set to finally come into fruition after Sheffield City Council announced that it is committed to moving plans forward.

The New Retail Quarter scheme, previously marketed as Sevenstones, was shelved last year after a partnership between the project’s contractors Hammerson and Sheffield City Council fell through.

The project has now re-surfaced and will see the property between the Devonshire Quarter and The Moor developed into high-class retail spaces.

The options for structuring the property deal are being finalised and will be presented to Cabinet for approval. The Council will then consider whether to find a forward sale with interim funding or fund the scheme directly themselves.

Talks are currently being held with affected property owners in the area, who are hoping to be able to continue trading in their properties, until building developments are due to commence.

The Council’s Cabinet Member for Business, Skills and Development, Leigh Bramall said: “We are fully committed to moving the development of the New Retail Quarter forward urgently now and this decision to secure the ownership of the properties needed for the development is key to making things happen”.

Drawing on the necessity to keep the area attractive to shoppers until the development gets underway, Mr. Bramall continued: “We are also conscious that the existing businesses should be able to continue their trade in their current premises whenever possible to ensure the area remains attractive to shoppers during this crucial period of transition”.

The Quarter is set to be a crucial element for the regeneration of the city centre as it sits alongside other developments including new improvements to The Moor which have already seen success as the Heart of the City scheme looks to shift up a gear. It is expected that the scheme will provide around 2,500 new jobs.

Councillor Ben Curran, the Council’s Cabinet Member for Finance and Resources said: “Once completed, the New Retail Quarter will help to improve the status of the City and will help to stimulate further office, commercial and leisure opportunities in Sheffield City centre. This development will bring significant external investment into the city as well as giving a massive boost to the city centre’s retail offer”

108 holes of golf – all in aid of Support Dogs

Support_dogsThree clubs, six courses, 108 holes of golf… this Friday (20 June) Mercury Taxis’ Dermot Griffiths and Peter Holmes will attempt a “Golfathon” – aiming to play 18 holes of golf at six different golf courses in and around the Sheffield area.

And it’s not just for fun – they’re raising money for Support Dogs, a national charity dedicated to increasing independence and improving the quality of life for children and adults affected by autism, epilepsy and physical disability.

Starting out at 4.45am in the morning at Abbeydale Golf Club and finishing (hopefully) at around 10pm in the evening up at Tankersley Park Golf Club, Dermotand Peter will be undertaking their ‘Golfathon’ with the aid of just three golf clubs each.

During the day Dermot and Peter will also be playing at Dore and Totley Golf Club, Beauchief Golf Club, Tinsley Park and Hillsborough Golf Clubs as part of the challenge.

Peter told Sheffield Live:

Sheffielders buying shares in local media operation

SCM_ProgressCommitments of over £40,000 have been made to Sheffield Community Media’s Pioneer and Community Share Offer – taking the investment opportunity for anyone who lives, works, or has interests in Sheffield to own their very own television channel over a quarter of the way towards its target.

And excitement is building about the plans – with comments rolling in from more figures in Sheffield’s business, entertainment, media, social enterprise and community sectors.

Peter Johnson commented “I’m buying shares in Sheffield Community Media because I’ve always been a huge fan of sheffield live radio and if the television channel  is going to be anything like the output of the radio, it’ll be a great service for Sheffield.”

In May 2012, Ofcom, the communications regulator, advertised local digital TV licences for Sheffield and 20 other ‘pioneer locations’. Sheffield Local Television Ltd, wholly owned by Sheffield Community Media Ltd, was the winning applicant for the Sheffield local TV service.

Launching in 2014, the new television channel Sheffield Live TV will cover Sheffield news; events; music; sports and culture. It will reflect the interests of Sheffield people and communities – and provide a platform for local talent and opportunities for local businesses.

It will be Sheffield’s first digital local TV channel, broadcasting on Freeview channel 8, cable and the internet.

And it will be part of a new cross-platform media partnership – radio, TV, web and mobile – working with existing community radio station Sheffield Live 93.2 FM and a new web and mobile Sheffield news service.

_1040946Sheffield is often described as the greenest city in England, including one third of the Peak District National Park; when in Sheffield you are never far from parks, woodland or countryside.

Now a new piece of research, being undertaken on behalf of Sheffield City Council and Creative Sheffield by Sheffield Hallam University’s Sport Industry Research Centre, is being undertaken to asses the value of Sheffield’s outdoor economy – and your views are invited!

You can help to assess the importance of Sheffield’s ‘Great Outdoors’ to you and your family by completing the quick survey here before 6pm on Sunday, 1st June – it will only take a few minutes and you can be entered into a prize draw for £100 cash.

The survey is for everybody to complete – whether you participate in outdoor recreational activities or not. With a planned launch date for Sheffield Live! TV of autumn 2014 on Freeview, and a news operation starting from July via our new website and through Sheffield Live 93.2FM, we now need to recruit some talented, passionate staff committed to help make our vision become reality.

Head of News (SLTV)

Full time. Salary, according to experience, in the range £26,000 to £32,000 per annum. 

Sheffield Live TV (SLTV) is the new local television channel for Sheffield co-located with Sheffield Live community radio and part of a new cross platform media offer for the local community. News programming will be at the heart of the new cross platform approach with regular bulletins on both radio and TV, a flagship early evening local TV news programme and a news feed to web and mobile.

The Head of News will be responsible for leading a team of radio, TV and online news reporters including news journalism apprentices, student reporters and community correspondents. They will build a network of sources including hyperlocal news partners and will build relations across the city with the public and private sector and with neighbourhood-based and specialist organisations.

Technical Manager (SLTV)

Full time. Salary, according to experience, in the range £24,000 to £30,000 per annum. 

SLTV is a partner in Digital Media Exchange (DME), a project managed by a consortium of partners and part funded by the European Union through the Yorkshire and Humber ERDF Programme 2007-2013. DME is designed to promote jobs and enterprise by supporting digital media entrepreneurs to engage in cross-platform production for radio, television, web and mobile, building on existing infrastructure previously supported by ERDF and benefiting from investment in a new local television channel for Sheffield.

The Technical Manager will provide support in the use of studio and mobile audio visual equipment and facilities as part of the delivery of Action 3 of the Digital Media Exchange (DME) project, including induction and supervision of new users, coordination of technical assistance, assuring the smooth functioning of equipment and software and maintaining production, broadcast and network systems.
