Broomhill Library have received a grant from the Big Lottery for improvements to the Victorian building and to restore its long-abandoned Percy Cain Heritage Garden. The building on Taptonville Road was privately owned before being converted to a library in 1957. Since 2014 it has been run by volunteers who are hoping it can be developed as a community hub. The opening event for Nether Edge Festival 2018 was held at the Common Ground Community Centre with music, dance, face-painting, arts and crafts activities. The Age Better in Sheffield campaign, led by South Yorkshire Housing Association, is seeking to reduce isolation and loneliness among over 50s with a toolkit going out initially to 7,000 households in the Firth Park area. The kits are designed to encourage people to connect with one another, especially those who may feel isolated, and include information about activities and facilities as well as advice. Thousand of people flocked to Norfolk Heritage Park for the 16th annual Sheffield Fayre. The bank holiday crowds were not disappointed as the sun came out for the free event with attractions ranging from fairground rides and food to a blooming horticultural show, crafts, games and market stalls. Fine weather brought huge crowds to the annual Stannington Carnival, a community-led celebration which has been a summer fixture for over 20 years. With music including Stannington Mixed Choir, Stannington Brass Band and the Old Friends Folk Bank, the traditional village carnival provided a diversity of family entertainment from the Scrufts Fun Dog Show to street dance performance, archery and face painting. The Peace in the Park festival returned to Sheffield for 2017 with the message of reclaiming peace in the world and the power of community action. The Broomhall Together day for local residents included activities, advice and dialogue with police, emergency services, Sheffield Council and community groups. The event brought together residents and public agencies to talk about issues and problems in the community, services available and how to tackle crime and improve safety in the neighbourhood. Lord Mayor of Sheffield, Denise Fox, was present at the awards ceremony to recognise residents from Parsons Cross and Loxley involved in Activity Sheffield. The programme supports people and communities in the most deprived neighbourhoods to keep active and to access work. Ochre Dike Playing Fields in Waterthorpe has been granted official recognition through the Fields in Trust scheme which protects designated open spaces against commercial development. Located near Crystal Peaks shopping complex, the playing fields are an important green space for those who live, work and study in the area and have been the focus of a campaign by local councillors and residents for the site to stay in public use. Fields in Trust status protects a diversity of open spaces across the UK from sports pitches to children’s playgrounds, bicycle trails to country parks. Ochre Dike Playing Field was formally accepted in 2015 and has now been presented with the official designation plaque at a special ceremony. Simon Thake reports for Sheffield Live!
