Walkley Library, which was saved from closure in 2014 after a community campaign, is celebrating two years of running independently as a community library with the support of local volunteers. At an open event to celebrate the achievement members of the public were invited to take part in activities aimed at showing the range of services on offer and to contribute to a survey on further improvements. Community workers in Sharrow have been determined to offer creative opportunities for local teens after anti-social bonfire night scenes in recent years. Last year local youths in Sharrow threw rocks and fireworks at passing cars and eleven arrests were made. The Autumn Carnival at Highfield Adventure Playground featured local music, food and crafts. The Jane Tomlinson Appeal has awarded two Sheffield charities significant grants to support their healthcare work. Weston Park Hospital will be assisted to provide essential support to older cancer patients, while Paces Sheffield will receive a grant for a fieldworker to support children with complex health needs. A post office in Darnall run by Darnall Forum could close after the charity’s budget was cut by Sheffield City Council. Six years ago Darnall Forum took the lead in re-opening Darnall’s only post office after it had been closed for eight months. Now, faced with budget cuts, the community forum can no longer afford to run the business and is calling for local and community investors to help save the post office and take it into community ownership. Sheffield social enterprise, Under The Stars, are celebrating a new generation of DJ talent. Newly trained DJs will be demonstrating their skills alongside other artists and music acts, including Sheffield legend DJ Pipes, as part of a collaboration with ‘Party for the People’. Under the stars is a social enterprise run by and for people with a learning disability and their friends.
Sheffield United’s Chris Basham will begin his three match suspension when Bristol Rovers visit Bramall Lane following his red card against Scunthorpe at the weekend. Hundreds of people, including children and families, enjoyed their August bank holiday at the Sheffield Fayre at Norfolk Heritage Park. The Fayre features a horticultural show as well as an arena for local dance and performing talent. There were also sideshows, fairground activities and street dancers performing to keep the crowd entertained. The Sheffield Fayre is in its fifteenth year and is organised by Sheffield City Council in partnership with the Friends of Norfolk Heritage Park, University of Sheffield and the National Fairground Archive. South Yorkshire police hope that joint campaigns with Europe on issues such as modern slavery alongside cooperation on International arrest warrants will continue but say that at the moment how that will happen is unclear.
President of Sheffield Chamber of Commerce Jillian Thomas, welcomed a report, which favoured the city centre option, for the HS2 train stop. The report also said it would save £768 million pounds on the overall budget of the project to go for Midland station.
