Latest unemployment figures reveal that the number of people without a job in Yorkshire fell by 2,000 between May and July 2018 to 118,000. A shipping container has been on display in Sheffield city centre, demonstrating to the public what an affordable home of the future might look like. Fitted out with a compact design including a bed, toilet, kitchen and seating area, container homes are offered as a way to reduce homelessness and improve access to low cost housing. South Yorkshire’s police and crime commissioner, Dr Alan Billings, has said the spike in knife crime is alarming but police are doing their best to tackle the issue. Nether Edge and Sharrow councillor, Jim Steinke, has urged residents in the area to remain calm after a man was shot in Wostenholm Road in the early hours of Wednesday morning. The Age Better in Sheffield campaign, led by South Yorkshire Housing Association, is seeking to reduce isolation and loneliness among over 50s with a toolkit going out initially to 7,000 households in the Firth Park area. The kits are designed to encourage people to connect with one another, especially those who may feel isolated, and include information about activities and facilities as well as advice.
