Former UK sports minister and Sheffield Central MP Richard Caborn was honoured “Freedom of the City,” for dedicating his life to Sheffield and its people. Caborn was awarded the honour for his contribution to the advancement of sport in Sheffield, nationally and internationally, and for other services to the city. The Centre for Equity & Inclusion at the University of Sheffield has launched a new programme for post-graduate researchers of minority backgrounds. The scheme offers training workshops, mental health and wellbeing support, and mentoring opportunities. Now in its second year, the research hub seeks to enhance the university experience for post-graduates of colour, while challenging racism within and beyond higher education. Wilko shops are to close across the UK tis weekend after the company went into administreation in August and failed to find a buyer. Employees at the high street chain’s store in Sheffield spoke to Sheffield Live! of their disappointment, describing the closure as “the end of an era”. Baillor Jalloh reports.
The brutal coup d’etat in Chile on 11 September 1973 left thousands dead, many more in exile, and overthrew Salvador Allende’s democratically-elected government. Sheffield is among the cities that gave sanctuary to Chilean refugees. The Chilean community and friends held a march and rally on Saturday. Sheffield based social enterprise, Motion Exercise CIC, has launched a new digital platform for activity coordinators working with care home residents. With the support of Sheffield City Trust the company has launched Motion Wellbeing designed to enhance physical and mental wellbeing through exercise. A new alliance of mental health providers and service users has been launched to improve the health and well-being of the people of Sheffield. The Synergy mental health alliance has more than 100 members including voluntary organisations, decision makers from the local authority, GP’s, and experts by lived experience working together to improves the lives of people with mental health issues.
