Junior doctors and members of the public took part in a ‘Meet the Doctors’ event in Barkers Pool today. The grassroots movement says the Government’s proposals for a seven day NHS is not fair and not safe. This comes after plans for a new contract which would implement a seven day service of the NHS. Health Secretary, Jeremy Hunt has already offered an eleven percent pay rise for junior doctors, and a number of concessions. As part of a national campaign, Junior Doctors were encouraging the public here in Sheffield to sign the petition, and have a photo taken to share on social media.
Hundreds of people took part in a rally in Sheffield today, to call on the Government to take action and save the British steel industry. The Trade Union Council, steel workers from across the country and their families marched from Tudor Square to the City Hall, where they heard from a number of speakers. Thousands of job cuts have already been announced in Scunthorpe, Teeside and Lanarkshire. The TUC fear more cuts will hit South Yorkshire.
The Special Olympics will be making it’s way to Sheffield in 2017, it will be the 10th in history of the organisation and the second to be held in Sheffield. It is the largest registered charity providing year-round sports training and competition opportunities for people with learning disabilities. Almost 1.2 million people in the UK which is 2% of the population are affected. Women in Rotherham are being invited to walk through the town centre on Saturday to ‘Reclaim the Night.’ The event aims to campaign against all forms of abuse towards women, take back the streets and make them safe for everyone. The national movement already takes place in many towns and cities, including Sheffield, but it’ll be the first for Rotherham. Councillor Emma Hoddinott and Councillor Jo Burton from Rotherham Borough Council told Sheffield Live more about the event and why they organised it.
It’s over 24 years since Ben Needham went missing on the Greek Island of Kos. On the twenty fourth of July 1991, Ben was playing at his grandparents farmhouse before he disappeared. Tomorrow, Ben would have turned twenty six years old. Back in January the Home Office granted funding for the most in depth investigation so far. Ben’s mother, Kerry Needham was part of a TV appeal in Greece to find new leads and appeal for information. As Greek authorities continue to search for Ben, South Yorkshire Police say they’re ahead of schedule in the investigation.
Hundreds of people marched through Sheffield city centre today to show their support for refugees in Syria and welcome more into the city. The rally, organised by Sheffield City of Sanctuary, went from the bottom of the Moor to the Town Hall, where there were a number of speakers, including Director of Liberty, Shami Chakrabarti. They were aiming to send a message to Sheffield City Council and the Government that Britain should take more refugees stranded in Europe. This follows the campaigners handing in a petition to the council on Wednesday. Sheffield City Council said they will resettle one hundred and thirty refugees this year, and have offered to take ten to fifteen Syrian families as soon as possible.
The European Championships, which are taking place in Denmark next week, will be the final major event before the 2016 Paralympic games, where athletes can directly qualify for Rio. Some of the athletes, including men’s class seven world champion Will Bayley, were training at the English Institute of Sport this week.
Today is the second day of Black history month 2015. This is a month where Afro-Caribbeans celebrate their achievements and contributions to the success of this country. An Independent Review looking into the handling of child sexual exploitation by South Yorkshire Police has been launched by Police and Crime Commissioner, Dr Alan Billings. It was announced back in March, following the Alexis Jay and the Louise Casey reports into Child Sexual Exploitation in Rotherham. Professor John Drew will be leading the review, which is expected to establish whether South Yorkshire Police have acted upon recent findings and inspections.
