Homelessness charity Roundabout are celebrating forty years of services by hosting Britain’s first art roadshow banger rally with the theme Bangers and Cash. The charity are inviting forty local businesses to each purchase an old car worth £650 or less and have it painted by a local artist to drive from Sheffield to Monte Carlo. The car bonnets will then go to an exhibition to be auctioned off for charity. Nick Coleman reports for Sheffield Live!
Sheffield Councillor, Ben Curran, has confirmed his intention to stand as Labour candidate for election as mayor of Sheffield City Region. Curran is one of three candidates in the party to stand, including former Sheffield Central MP, Richard Caborn and Dan Jarvis, the MP for Barnsley Central. Elections for the mayor’s position are scheduled for May as part of a £900m devolution deal. Labour is the first party to announce their candidates. Baillor Jalloh reports for Sheffield Live!
Iranians in Sheffield staged a demonstration outside Sheffield Town Hall at the weekend demanding freedom and democracy for Iran. According to campaigner Siama Zaad, the group called “Wanted Freedom for Iran” were protesting against the Iranian government’s persecution of democracy protestors who, they claim, have been subject to torture and imprisonment. Sheffield has won a national award recognising it as one of the UK’s hot-spots for social enterprise, businesses with a social or environmental mission. Social enterprise is a fast growing and important part of the local and national economy helping to re-generate communities, create jobs where they are needed most and reduce inequalities. Former Sheffield MP, Richard Caborn, has announced his bid for selection by the Labour Party as their candidate for the mayoral position for the Sheffield City Region. The former sports minister is the first to formally announce his intention to stand. Sheffield Councillor Ben Curran also announced his candidacy before the Thursday deadline. Meadowhall has selected Yorkshire Air Ambulance as their chosen charity for 2018/19 and aims to raise £150k in the next two years. The life saving charity maintains and operates two helicopters with full medical crews covering the Yorkshire region. The YAA said it costs around £12,000 a day to run a single helcopter. The charity replaces the Bluebell Wood Childen’s Centre, which received £128,000 from the centre in the last two years.
More than fifty people march through Sheffield city centre on Saturday in a bid to save Niche Nightclub on Walker Street whose licence is under review following a stabbing incident. The rally began peacefully outside the club and proceed to the Town Hall and then to Snig Hill police station. The club was issued with a 48-hour closure notice after five men were injured on 23 December, four of them with stab wounds. Sheffield Council will meet on Thursday to decide the faith of the club. Sheffield City Council has been holding a recruitment fair at the Millennium Gallery to provide advice and information about opportunities in the care industry and to recruit new care workers. The event was attended by the council’s apprenticeship, social work, intervention and prevention, residential children’s, and fostering and adoption teams. A new park and ride facility has been unveiled in Tinsley at IKEA Sheffield. The development was one of the conditions of planning approval for the furniture store and brings a total of eight park and ride facilities now available across the city.
