Police chief asked to explain response to tree row

Liberal Democrat peer, Paul Scriven, is demanding South Yorkshire Police explain the deployment of dozens of police officers on Abbeydale Park Rise on Monday, when a row began between tree campaigners and council contractor Amey. Sheffield Live! reporter, Baillor Jalloh, spoke to Lord Scriven.

Doodling draws a crowd for charity fundraiser

A new creative art and fundraising event Funk ‘n’ Doodle, hosted at The Albion pub on London Road, has raised over £7,000 for Mind, the mental health charity. The event, bringing people together to destress by doodling and dancing to a funky soundtrack of up and coming Sheffield DJ’s, is the debut promotion of Fellevents, a student-led arts collective. Hundreds join rally in support of university staff

Hundreds joined a rally from the University of Sheffield to Barker’s Pool in support of university staff on strike in a row over proposed changes to their pension scheme. Lecturers, represented in the dispute by the University and College Union, say the changes could leave them thousands of pounds out of pocket. Baillor Jalloh reports for Sheffield Live!

Gritting lorries out to keep Sheffield moving

With cold temperatures and snow arriving from Siberia, gritting lorries have been out in force to prepare for the expected impact on roads and traffic. The met office have predicted the weather will worsen over the course of the week and police have asked people to make journeys only where necessary. Uber gives drivers 3 weeks to obtain local licence to operate

Uber drivers have converged on the company’s office in Sheffield following news that private hire licences acquired in other locations will no longer be transferrable. Previously the company allowed an Uber driver to acquire a licence in one region and to operate in another. Now they have been given just three weeks to acquire a licence locally. Longest running folk festival returns to Sheffield

The student-run Inter Varsity Folk Dance Festival, which returns to Sheffield for the ninth time, was first launched in Leeds in 1951 and is the UK’s longest continually running folk festival. Followers of folk music and dance from across the country will get to enjoy the three day festival packed with workshops, performances, singarounds and dances. Conservation volunteers clean up Ochre Dyke

Local volunteers put their wellies on to help clean up and maintain the Ochre Dyke stream in Crystal Peaks as part of an environmental conservation and improvement project. The work is coordinated by the River Stewardship Company, a Sheffield-based social enterprise working to maintain Sheffield’s waterways for people and wildlife. Councillor Magid prepares for Lord Mayor role

Green Party councillor and Deputy Lord Mayor Magid Magid, due to take over in May the largely ceremonial role of Lord Mayor of Sheffield, spoke to Sheffield Live! on what he hopes to achieve. Magid chaired his first full Council meeting at the Town Hall this week, in which tree campaigners staged a sit-in protest against Amey’s tree felling programme. He has also been in the media spotlight as an undercover fugitive evading secret agents in the Channel 4 reality TV show Hunted. Azz Mohammed reports for Sheffield Live!
