Sheffield’s ‘Tent City’, set up outside Park Hill flats to assist some of the local homeless, has been benefiting from donations and support from the general public. British Land the joint owner of Meadowhall in Sheffield, has submitted a detailed planning application to Sheffield City Council for a £300 million Meadowhall Leisure Hall. The proposed extension is billed as the next phase of Meadowhall’s evolution and will follow a £60 million refurbishment due to complete at the end of 2017. The extension comprises a 330,000 square feet multi-level extension housed under a glazed roof, offering dining and entertainment as well as internal and external spaces for events and community use. Shops and stalls in Sheffield city centre will be open late on Thursday night as part of the recently launched ‘alive after five’ campaign. The evening opening aims to boost footfall in the quiet period after work and before the night time economy takes off. The Sheffield homelessness charity, Roundabout, have opened their ‘Number 11’ refurbished flats at the charities hostel on St Barnabas Road. The ribbon was cut by Sheffield Lord Mayor, Councillor Denis Fox together with a young resident of the flats. Number 11 consists of five self-contained flats with eight bedrooms, next door to the main hostel. The charity provides emergency and medium-stay accommodation for homeless single young people, aged 16 to 21. Sheffield City Council’s ‘Grey to Green’ project is replacing areas of city centre pavement with rain gardens designed to assist natural and sustainable drainage. The scheme was awarded both the Outstanding Project Award and the Open Spaces Award at this year’s Sheffield Design Awards. The main purpose of the awards is to recognise buildings and open spaces that meet high architectural standards and contribute to the environment. A group of homeless people in Sheffield have set up camp on a patch of land in front of Park Hill flats. Dubbed ‘Sheffield Tent City’, the camp holds around a dozen tents providing shelter and access to food and provisions. The camp was organised by homelessness campaigner Anthony Cunningham to give rough sleepers somewhere to go and for charities and services to find people who need their help. Market stall owners from Sheffield Moor Market have created a risqué fundraising calendar posing with some of their products and very little else. Inspired by the Calendar Girls story, all the money raised will go to local autism charity, Buzz Sheffield. A demonstration outside Sheffield Town Hall has sought to raise awareness of the unresolved conflict over Kashmir and related human rights abuses. The conflict, which dates back to the partition of India in 1947, has its roots in the contest for territorial control of the Kashmir region primarily between India and Pakistan, but also involves China and a number of local insurgent groups, including independence supporters. The conflict has led to many civilian deaths and widespread human rights violations. Sheffield Live! reporter Simon Thake spoke to campaigners outside the Town Hall.
Sheffield’s Green Party councillors are calling for the City Council to set an ambition of making Sheffield the UK’s first ‘fossil-free city’. In a motion for debate, the Greens are calling for Sheffield to tackle climate change by becoming the first city in the UK in which all major local government, higher and further education, and faith organisations have divested their investments and pension funds from fossil fuels. Jenny Christie who lost her father to pancreatic cancer is to walk 210 miles from London to Sheffield to raise money for Pancreatic Cancer UK. Her walk is planned to coincide with the pancreatic cancer awareness month of November and, all going well, will be completed in 10 days.
