Council seeks proposals to transform ‘ski village’ site

Sheffield City Council has confirmed it is seeking a developer to transform the derelict site at Parkwood Springs into a “nationally-significant attraction”. The artificial ski slope was closed after a fire in 2012 and the facilities destroyed by a plague of arson attacks. The council now owns the former ski village site land and is set to test the market by asking investors and developers to bring forward ideas for the wider area as an urban country park or activity centre. An initial study suggests the site is a “viable business opportunity” that can contribute to Sheffield’s reputation as The Outdoor City. Sheffield Live! reporter Simon Thake spoke to Neil Schofield,  chair of Friends of Parkwood Springs.

 

Sheffield tree campaigners protest outside Town Hall

Two hundred people gathered outside Sheffield Town Hall to protest against the Council’s tree felling programme before a Council debate on the issue. Members of Sheffield Tree Action Group and Save Our Roadside Trees addressed protesters ahead of the full council meeting which debated a Green Party tabled motion of ‘no confidence’. Sheffield Live! reporter Sham Powell spoke with former Green Party leader Natalie Bennett.

 

Sheffield set to become fossil fuel free city

Sheffield City Council voted last week not to invest in fossil fuels putting Sheffield on target to become one of the world’s first fossil fuel free cities. Decisions to divest from fossil fuels have previously been made by both of Sheffield’s universities and other public bodies are being pressed by campaigners to make similar commitments. Sheffield Live! reporter Azz Mohammed spoke to Green Party Councillor Rob Murphy who supported the move.

Green Party call for Sheffield to become ‘fossil free’

Sheffield’s Green Party councillors are calling for the City Council to set an ambition of making Sheffield the UK’s first ‘fossil-free city’. In a motion for debate, the Greens are calling for Sheffield to tackle climate change by becoming the first city in the UK in which all major local government, higher and further education, and faith organisations have divested their investments and pension funds from fossil fuels. GMB workers picket outside Beighton recycling site

The GMB held a picket today at the Beighton Road recycling site. They are asking for better facilities, fairer pay and against alleged bullying. Veolia and Sheffield City Council said they are continuing to support the Green Company and are encouraging discussions so that issues can be resolved quickly.

City consults on learning disability services

Sheffield City Council are asking the public to reshape the care offered to people with learning disabilities in the City. The eight week consultation started last week and continues until 4th November. Councillor Mary Lea, the cabinet member for Health, Care and Independent Living spoke to Sheffield Live! TV about the consultation. Report by Charlotte Reid.

_1040946Sheffield is often described as the greenest city in England, including one third of the Peak District National Park; when in Sheffield you are never far from parks, woodland or countryside.

Now a new piece of research, being undertaken on behalf of Sheffield City Council and Creative Sheffield by Sheffield Hallam University’s Sport Industry Research Centre, is being undertaken to asses the value of Sheffield’s outdoor economy – and your views are invited!

You can help to assess the importance of Sheffield’s ‘Great Outdoors’ to you and your family by completing the quick survey here before 6pm on Sunday, 1st June – it will only take a few minutes and you can be entered into a prize draw for £100 cash.

The survey is for everybody to complete – whether you participate in outdoor recreational activities or not. It will only take 2 minutes; your responses are confidential and will only be used for this research. You will only be contacted if you are the prize winner.  The deadline for survey completion is Sunday 1st June.

Library plans discussed in Sheffield Live interviews

Now that the Council have announced their proposed changes to Sheffield’s Libraries, the Cabinet Member responsible, Councillor Mazher Iqbal, came into Sheffield Live! to the discuss the plans.

In a two-part interview with Sheffield Live’s Laurence Peacock, Councillor Iqbal discussed the the financial background of the proposed changes and the question of sustaining independent libraries.

In part two, we focused on the details of the volunteer groups who have so far come forward to take over some city libraries and the feasibility of their doing so.

Clearing up snow clearance myths

Before you start clearing the snow from your driveway and pavement, let’s clear up some misconceptions around the myth of legal liabilities. It is believed that one can become legally liable for clearing public pathways if someone trips or fall.

The Department of Transport and the Department of Communities and Local Government have repudiated this misconception in a guide they issued in November 2010.

To find out Sheffield City Council’s position on the issue, we spoke with Cllr Shaffaq Mohammad, cabinet member for communities, who told us about the legal support the council is offering in this matter.
