Sheffield Women against Pit Closures are the subject of a new ‘protest lab’ exhibition at the Millenium Gallery. The exhibition includes memorabilia, banners and poetry from the 1984/85 miners strike but also for the first time from the women’s pit camp at Houghton Main in 1993 set up to campaign against pit closures. Around four hundred people took part in a march and rally to remember what has widely become known as the Battle of Orgreave. The Orgreave Truth and Justice campaign have produced a report and are calling for a public inquiry in to what happened on 18 June 1984.
A legal submission has been handed in to the Government, asking Home Secretary, Theresa May for a public inquiry into police conduct during the miners strike. The submission included testimonials from miners and their wives, and photos.
Thirty years ago South Yorkshire was in the middle of the Miners Strike. The award winning documentary, Still the Enemy Within, is being shown again to mark this historic working class struggle.
