Lord Mayor turns out for Man with the Pram book signing

Cancer fundraising hero, John Burkhill, known as the Man with the Pram, was at a book signing event at the Moor Market today. John who is 77 years old, has raised £350,000 for Macmillan Cancer Support and has completed at least 965 races including running the London Marathon 16 times. Sheffield Live! reporter Shamaan Freeman-Powell spoke to one of his biggest fans, Lord Mayor Denise Fox.

Volunteers organise to support Tent City homeless

Sheffield’s ‘Tent City’, set up outside Park Hill flats to assist some of the local homeless, has been benefiting from donations and support from the general public. Appeals launched on social media have encouraged people to bring food, clothes, medical supplies and bedding. Sheffield Live! reporter Simon Thake spoke with a mother and daughter volunteering team.

Roundabout opens refurbished flats for young people

The Sheffield homelessness charity, Roundabout, have opened their ‘Number 11’ refurbished flats at the charities hostel on St Barnabas Road. The ribbon was cut by Sheffield Lord Mayor, Councillor Denis Fox together with a young resident of the flats. Number 11 consists of five self-contained flats with eight bedrooms, next door to the main hostel. The charity provides emergency and medium-stay accommodation for homeless single young people, aged 16 to 21. Sheffield homeless living in ‘Tent City’

A group of homeless people in Sheffield have set up camp on a patch of land in front of Park Hill flats. Dubbed ‘Sheffield Tent City’, the camp holds around a dozen tents providing shelter and access to food and provisions. The camp was organised by homelessness campaigner Anthony Cunningham to give rough sleepers somewhere to go and for charities and services to find people who need their help. Jane Tomlinson Appeal hands Sheffield charities a funding boost

The Jane Tomlinson Appeal has awarded two Sheffield charities significant grants to support their healthcare work. Weston Park Hospital will be assisted to provide essential support to older cancer patients, while Paces Sheffield will receive a grant for a fieldworker to support children with complex health needs. London to Sheffield walk for pancreatic cancer awareness

Jenny Christie who lost her father to pancreatic cancer is to walk 210 miles from London to Sheffield to raise money for Pancreatic Cancer UK. Her walk is planned to coincide with the pancreatic cancer awareness month of November and, all going well, will be completed in 10 days. Sheffield Young Carers announce charity fundraising concert

The High Sheriff’s Charity Concert is be held at the Cathedral Church of St Marie in support of local charity Sheffield Young Carers. The independent charity was established in 1997 and provides vital support to some of the city’s most vulnerable young carers. Sheffield Live! report Azz Mohammed spoke to the High Sheriff of South Yorkshire, Dr Julie Macdonald.

Herd of Sheffield bidder donates elephant to local school

Children’s Hospital Charity. Perhaps the most extraordinary story was that of the elephant ‘A Sheffield Summer’. Designed by Jane Norburn an administrator at High Storrs School the school rallied around and raised over two thousand pounds in a bid to keep their elephant at the school. On the auction night however the school was quickly outbid and the elephant snapped up for a whopping £6,200. Just when all seemed lost, the winning bidders called to say they we were so moved they wished to donate the elephant to the school. Sheffield Live! report Simon Thake spoke to Jane Norburn.

Safe@Last merge with Depaul to tackle homelessness

South Yorkshire charity Safe@Last have announced they will merge with the UK Depaul charity, part of a charitable group which operates in seven countries. Safe@Last support runaway children, young people and their families from a base in Dinngington. Depaul also tackle homelessness and currently have a strong presence in South Yorkshire with their homelessness hub on Eyre Street. In the UK, an estimated 100,000 children and young people a year run away from home or care. Shamaan Freeman Powell reports for Sheffield Live!

Raising awareness of M.E.

Sheffield M.E. Group are providing a public information point this week in the Winter Gardens to raise awareness about Myalgic Encephalomyelitis (M.E.). Sheffield M.E. Group are a registered charity providing information, support, and a point of contact for people of all ages with M.E., as well as their families and carers. M.E., also known as Chronic Fatigue Syndrome (C.F.S.) and Fibromyalgia, is estimated to effect around 7,000 people locally.
