Labour’s deputy leader seeks secure future for steel

Tom Watson, Deputy Leader of the Labour Party, speaking at the Sheffield Brightside and Hillsborough by-election count, said: “In Sheffield the debate about the future of British steel has seized all of our attention. Jeremy took a leadership position on that. Hopefully it will mean we can secure the future of that industry. It’s early days in Jeremy’s leadership but I hope we are showing there’s a different way to do politics.”

Industry Day – film, TV and new media

Sheffield Live, South Yorkshire Filmmakers’ Network, Kinematic Media and The Sheffield College have come together to offer a new series of creative media skills workshops for filmmakers and broadcast journalists. This series is supported by Sheffield City Region – Skills Bank.

This one day long free workshop will help you develop your idea into a viable production for film, TV or new media – from concept to treatment, audience and distribution opportunities, including Sheffield Live TV. You will get to pitch your idea to an expert panel and gain industry advice on commissioning and funding.

Cyclists raising money for charity

Eight Sheffield cyclists are going to ride from Lands End to John O’ Groats to raise money for Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy.  The disorder affects mainly boys and is progressive muscle wasting disease that is life limiting. There is currently no known cure. They Sheffield riders will be part of a 32 strong team that is aiming to raise £70,000 during the 1,000 mile ride.

4 July is Sheffield Pride Day.

Sheffield Pride is taking place at the  Sheffield Students’ Union at the University of Sheffield. the festival will have various activities, music, and food and drink .  Pride is hoping to re start the local gay scene in Sheffield.

Orgreave Justice Campaign call for full public inquiry

The Battle of Orgreave took place 31 years ago during the miners strike and a rally is being held to remember the event.  The IPCC recently unannounced that it would not be investigating what happened on 18 June 1984.The Orgreave Peace and Justice campaign have said they are not surprised by the decision and is now calling for a full public inquiry in to the events.

Local authors publish book

A new creative writing group which has been meeting at the Archer Project has released its first book of memoirs, fiction and poetry. The group called Unscribe has received funding from Sheffield Hallam Student Union.

Father had to choose which daughter to stay with

Trevor Hicks told the Hillsborough inquest how he went between both of his daughters trying to resuscitate them.  He also said he felt “dreadful” after choosing to go to the Northern General with Vicki, leaving Sarah behind thinking she would be in the next Ambulance. Both his daughters Sarah 19 and Victoria 15 died on the 15 April 1989 at Sheffield Wednesday Football Ground. They were two of Ninety-six Liverpool fans who were fatally injured when Liverpool played Nottingham Forest FA Cup semi-final.
