Top 12 Christmas toys revealed

This week at Meadowhall the top 12 toys for Christmas 2015 were revealed, with Star Wars, Thunderbirds and Frozen all making the list.The Toy Retailers Association said 2015 would be what they call a “vintage year” for toys as it released its annual ‘Dream Toys’ list of what it predicts the top-sellers to be. Star Wars products related to the new film The Force Awakens, which opens next month, take the top three spots. Update on search for Ben Needham to mark his 26th birthday

It’s over 24 years since Ben Needham went missing on the Greek Island of Kos. On the twenty fourth of July 1991, Ben was playing at his grandparents farmhouse before he disappeared. Tomorrow, Ben would have turned twenty six years old. Back in January the Home Office granted funding for the most in depth investigation so far. Ben’s mother, Kerry Needham was part of a TV appeal in Greece to find new leads and appeal for information. As Greek authorities continue to search for Ben, South Yorkshire Police say they’re ahead of schedule in the investigation.

Sheffield Blitz Memorial Trail receives £81,300 from Heritage Lottery Fund

The Sheffield Blitz Memorial Trail has received eighty one thousand three hundred pounds from the Heritage Lottery Fund. Sheffield author, Neil Anderson, began working on the plans to commemorate the Sheffield Blitz with the publication of his book, ‘Sheffield’s Date with Hitler’ in 2010. Now, the 75th anniversary in December is set to be marked with an exhibition and trail around sixteen sites across the city. The Sheffield Blitz in December 1940 made almost a tenth of the city’s population homeless. Sheffield Live’s Kathryn Smiles went along to speak to Neil Anderson about the trail and the funding.

Classical Sheffield Festival of Music

Around six hundred musicians across thirty events have been performing in Sheffield this weekend for the Classical Sheffield Festival of Music. It’s the first year of the festival which has been organised by Music in the Round, Sheffield Philharmonic Chorus, Sheffield Symphony Orchestra and the University of Sheffield. It aims to promote professional and amateur classical music events to get more people involved in this genre of music.

SLTV celebrates it’s first birthday

SLTV first hit your screens on 23 September 2015 so we celebrated with a special edition of Talking Sheffield hosted by Simon Thake in front of a live audience. The guests were Steve Buckley, Chair of SLTV, Sara Hill from Opus Magazine and Lia Nici from Estuary TV.

First elephant unveiled for Herd of Sheffield

The first elephant which will form a public art trail across the city was launched in the Winter Gardens last night. ‘The Herd of Sheffield 2016’ will include over forty individually designed elephant sculptures. The elephants will be in the city between July and September next year, then they’ll be auctioned to the public. The money will go towards The Children’s Hospital charity. Local illustrator, Geo Law has created the first one.

‘Too Old at 4?’ National Adoption Week

Figures published to mark National Adoption Week have revealed the average age of children waiting to be adopted is four years old. The figures from First 4 adoption show these children have waited the longest to be matched with adoptive families. Rotherham Council are aiming to provide potential parents with more information throughout the week. The Rotherham Adoption team have been at Wentworth Garden Centre, to speak to the public about their campaign, ‘Too old at 4?’ Social Worker, Wendy Caster says older children, children with disabilities and sibling groups are currently the least likely to be adopted.

Rotherham United unveil Neil Redfearn

Neil Redfearn was officially announced as Rotherham United manager today, he joins the club on a 2 and a half year deal. He replaces Steve Evans, who left Rotherham last month after more than three years in charge. Redfearn’s first game as Millers boss will be the trip to fellow strugglers Brentford on Saturday the 17th of October. Well at his unveiling he talked about joining the club, what he wants to achieve this season, his current playing squad and also about previous manager Steve Evans..please note there is flash photography in the video

Plaque unveiled for local World War 1 hero

Hundreds of people gathered in Barkers Pool this morning to remember one of Sheffield’s bravest World War One Veterans. Sergeant Major John Crawshaw Raynes earnt his Victoria Cross one hundred years ago for his bravery and devotion on duty. He went out under heavy shell fire to save his colleagues despite being badly gassed on the11th and injured on the 12th of October 1915. A special plaque and paving stone was unveiled during the service to commemorate Sergeant Raynes bravery, then the Lord Mayor, Master Cutler and children from Heeley School laid wreaths and paid their respects.
