Re-elected Police Commissioner supports inquiry into Orgreave

Dr Alan Billings has been re-elected to the post of South Yorkshire Police and Crime Commissioner with more than 50% of the first preference votes on an increased turnout.

Speaking to Sheffield Live after the results were announced, the Police Commissioner pledged his support for an inquiry into Orgreave and confirmed South Yorkshire police would cooperate and open its archives. The Battle of Orgreave took place during the 1984 miners’ strike. Campaigners have drawn parallels with the police handling of the Hillsborough disaster.

Gill Furniss wins Sheffield by-election

Gill Furniss, widow of former MP Harry Harpham, has won the Sheffield Brightside and Hillsborough by-election, with a 6% increase in Labour’s share of the vote.

Following an acceptance speech in which she promised to carry on Harry Harpham’s work, she told Sheffield Live!: “The steel issue is a big issue in the city. We have already been hurt in the past. But I think there’s a window of opportunity to keep steel in this city for the long term”.

Labour’s deputy leader seeks secure future for steel

Tom Watson, Deputy Leader of the Labour Party, speaking at the Sheffield Brightside and Hillsborough by-election count, said: “In Sheffield the debate about the future of British steel has seized all of our attention. Jeremy took a leadership position on that. Hopefully it will mean we can secure the future of that industry. It’s early days in Jeremy’s leadership but I hope we are showing there’s a different way to do politics.”

Whirlow Farm – Animal Artwork

Creatures from Whirlow Hall Farm have been getting creative this week producing unique animal artwork which was showcased at an exclusive art exhibition in Sheffield. The animal artwork produced by a range of animals including guinea pigs and ducks were being auctioned to raise money for the charity and to fund educational projects at the farm. Our reporter Simon Thake went along to investigate.

Nick Matthew launches Special Olympics South Yorkshire Partnership

People with learning difficulties have had the chance to take part in a number of different sports, including football, athletics and basketball, at the English Institute of Sport. Sheffield is preparing to host the Special Olympics National Games in August 2017, and today was the launch of the South Yorkshire Partnership. Participants, parents and carers could learn more about local sports clubs and how they can get involved.

Life: A Festival of Health, from Head to Toe

The public have been able to find out more about discoveries and medical research from the University of Sheffield, and get involved in interactive activities in The Moor market this weekend. It was all part of the ‘Life: A Festival of Health, from Head to Toe,’ which celebrates the medicine, dentistry and health research taking place in Sheffield.

Volunteers Get Rotherham Clean

Over this weekend, people in Rotherham have been getting involved in cleaning up the local community. Whilst council staff and partner organisations used specialist technical equipment to clean the streets, volunteers and staff from local businesses picked up litter in the town centre. Community clean ups have already taken place in Maltby, Thurcroft, Eastwood and Wath. They come ahead of the ‘Right Royal Vintage Hop’ event in June, which links with the Queen’s official 90th birthday weekend. It’s all part of a national scheme to keep towns and cities clean.
