Sheffield pupils bounce for Comic Relief

Pupils from Tinsley Meadows and Abbeyfield Primary Academy took part in the Big Bounce Comic Relief fundraising event organised by Meadowhall. The event was hosted at Sheffield’s newly opened JUMP trampoline park with red noses and fancy dress adding to the fun. Sheffield Live! reporter Simon Thake leapt at the chance to take part.

Sheffield pupils in mass choir

More than 500 young people from eight different primary schools from across the city have come together to form a mass choir. They will be showcasing their musical talents supported by teachers and the professional music educators at the Sheffield Music Hub.The experience has not only given the children an exciting opportunity it has brought together young people from a range of backgrounds and cultures allowing them to grow and share their musical journeys together. Sheffield schoolboy corrects NASA data

A Sheffield teenager has contacted scientists at the US space agency, NASA, to point out an error in their data collection from the International Space Station (ISS). A-level student Miles Soloman found that radiation sensors were recording false data readings and wrote to NASA to point out the anomaly. The 17-year-old from Tapton school in Sheffield said it was “pretty cool” to email the space agency. Simon Thake reports for Sheffield Live!

Sheffield charity receives funding boost to provide bikes for the disabled

Sheffield Cycling for All, part of Disability Sheffield, has been awarded a £46,000 grant by HealthRich to provide specially adapted bikes for people with various types of disability. The grant award, from funding raised through the Health Lottery, will enable the charity to offer affordable bike hire and other support to promote the health and wellbeing of disabled people. Citizens Advice Sheffield to develop services using British Sign Language

Citizens Advice Sheffield has been awarded a £25,000 grant from the Martin Lewis Fund to develop advice services for people who use British Sign Language (BSL). The project will offer digital advice via Skype to people who are deaf or hard of hearing and whose first language is BSL. The funding will enable tailored support to BSL users in new ways that could be rolled out to Citizens Advice services in other areas. Baillor Jalloh reports for Sheffield Live!

Deputy Leader of Sheffield Council resigns

Councillor Leigh Brammal, deputy leader of Sheffield City Council has resigned from his role with immediate affect and is to stand down as Labour councillor for Southey. Councillor Bramall, 42, has represented Southey ward since 2004 and was appointed deputy leader of the council in 2015. Bramall said the decision to leave was a wrench, but “it is the right decision for me and my family”. He is understood to be taking up a position with a communications company in Sheffield. History of protest on display at the Millennium Gallery

An exhibition that charts the history of protests and activism in Sheffield, from 1794 to the present day, is on display at The Millennium Gallery. The exhibition, titled Protest Lab, invites visitors to contribute by adding their own stories to the collection. The project is funded by the Esmée Fairbairn Foundation Collection Fund and will be on display until the end of May. Baillor Jalloh reports for Sheffield Live!

Access Card scheme to assist people with disability

Local charity, Disability Sheffield, has teamed up with Sheffield City Council and Nimbus to offer a new Access Card for disabled people and their carers. The card will help people with disability gain assistance with shopping and other activities. According to Government research, shopping, as well as other public activities such as going to the cinema, theatre or gigs, are among the most difficult experiences for disabled people. Campaigners protest over planned Smithy Wood service station

More than 150 people demonstrated outside Sheffield Town Hall over plans to build a motorway service station in ancient woodland at junction 35 of the M1. The £45 million development would include a fast food court, 80 bed hotel and a car park in Smithy Wood, near Thorpe Hesley. The protest was organised by Sheffield and Rotherham Wildlife Trust who are campaigning to block the proposal by developer MSA Extra and landowner St Paul’s. The planned development has been subject of a long-running dispute. A final decision was expected to be reached by Sheffield councillors on March 8 but has been post poned until further notice. Public urged to contribute to reducing air pollution

Members of the public have been hearing about and taking part in research at the Botanical Garden on the role of plants in absorbing air pollution in the city. The presentation by Dr Maria Val Martin, lecturer at the University of Sheffield took place at the new Dorothy Fox Education Centre. Participants were encouraged to make a difference by sharing cars, cycling to work or using public transport. Baillor Jalloh reports for Sheffield Live!
