Sheffield United have been crowned League One champions after Bolton fell out of the running with a loss at Oldham. Six years since the Blades last tasted success and following a series of below par performances and managerial changes, former Blades player Chris Wilder has changed the team philosophy and clinched the title with his first year in charge. World Snooker promoter Barry Hearn says players have made “amazing improvement” over 40 years of the top international competition. Over seventeen days, 32 players will compete for the coveted World Snooker title at Sheffield’s Crucible Theatre with Hearn predicting “a huge number of century breaks”. The snooker championship returns to the Crucible Theatre and celebrates the 40th year of World Snooker in Sheffield. World Snooker promoter Barry Hearn has vowed the tournament will remain in the city for at least a further 10 years. Mark Selby lifted the trophy last year and is favourite again this year. Sheffield lapdancing club Spearmint Rhino has had it’s license renewed for a further twelve months despite over 100 formal objections being made to Sheffield Council. The licensing committee of Sheffield Council imposed new restrictions however including a requirement that club signage be concealed during daylight hours. Simon Thake reports for Sheffield Live!
The inaugural Sheffield LGBT+ awards will take place over Easter weekend at the Library Theatre. The awards ceremony was started Sheffield PRIDE to reward and recognise those who have worked to promote LGBT+ causes. The Light, Sheffield’s newest multi-screen cinema opens on The Moor this weekend with an opening bill including the highly anticipated Fast and Furious 8. Local artist, Matt Cockayne, has been commissioned to produce a special artwork to celebrate 40 years of World Snooker at The Crucible. Cockayne of Goo Design has produced the limited edition print to mark the 40th anniversary of the World Snooker Championships coming to Sheffield. Tent City organiser, Anthony Cunningham, told Sheffield Live! services for the homeless have improved since the closure of the Tent City camp at Park Hill flats. The Tent City campaign put the focus on support for rough sleepers by providing a temporary camp with food, water and amenities. Now the organisers are launching a sunday morning breakfast club for the homeless and have welcomed the cooperation and support of Sheffield Council. Sheffield student candidates are gearing up for election campaigning to the National Union of Students (NUS) Executive Committee and other positions. The national student body represents students’ interests and provides advice and support on issues such as finance and how to gain post-study employment. South Yorkshire Police and Sheffield Hallam Students’ Union have teamed up to tackle hate crime in the city. Students and university staff are often reluctant to call in the police when confronted with hate crime.
