Peace in the Park celebrates 15th year

The Peace in the Park festival returned to Sheffield for 2017 with the message of reclaiming peace in the world and the power of community action. The arts and music festival is celebrating its fifteenth year since it launched in 2003 and is still run entirely by volunteers. Simon Thake reports for Sheffield Live!

Sheffield Palestine campaign in 24 hour charity run

The Sheffield Palestinian Solidarity Group organised a 24 hour run through Meersbrook Park to raise money for two Palestinian charities that provide education and support to children in Gaza. The runners will take turns to run through the night in hour long shifts with at least two runners taking part at any time. Simon Thake reports for Sheffield Live!

Heeley MP calls on May to resign

Louise Haigh the newly re-elected Labour MP for Sheffield Heeley told Sheffield Live! that Prime Minister Theresa May “has to resign” after her disastrous general election campaign. Ms Haigh also praised Jeremy Corbyn for his campaign performance and the Labour manifesto and predicted that a further general election would soon follow. Simon Thake reports for Sheffield Live!

Labour celebrates clean sweep in Sheffield

Crookes and Crosspool councillor and Lord Mayor of Sheffield, Anne Murphy, admitted she had “little sympathy” for ousted former Deputy PM and Lib Dem leader Nick Clegg. Clegg has held the Sheffield Hallam seat since 2005 but was defeated at the general election by first time Labour candidate Jared O’Mara who Ms Murphy praised as a new type of politican. Sheffield workers take to the streets

Dozens of Sheffield city workers put on their trainers at lunchtime and ventured out into the sunshine for a mid-day run. The event was organised as part of Move More Month and the Outdoor City initiative which will introduce new running routes to the city and an ambition to make Sheffield the most active city by 2020. Sheffield Live! reporter Simon Thake put on his running shoes to check out the routes.

New hotline to help for homeless people

A new telephone hotline and text messaging service has been launched to help provide support to people sleeping rough in Sheffield. The freephone number is part of a new Street Outreach Service provided by homelessness charity and housing association Framework and backed by Sheffield Council to provide support to homeless people and those at risk of homelessness. Sheffield Live! reporter Simon Thake earlier spoke with Sam Lloyd of Framework.

Volunteering celebrated in Rotherham Big Walk

The Big Walk is one of a series of events to celebrate thousands of people who contribute as volunteers, giving their time to do something for the community. Azz Mohammed spoke to event organiser Alison Thorp of Voluntary Action Rotherham and Chief Superintendent Rob Odell of South Yorkshire Police.

The Gruffalo appears in Sheffield Winter Garden

Much loved monster, The Gruffalo, appeared as part of National Bookstart Week to promote early years reading. The event, aimed at under 5s and their parents, was moved to the indoor location due to weather conditions. National Bookstart Week runs from 5 to 11 June. Azz Mohammed reports for Sheffield Live!
