Theresa May’s plan for a general election was confirmed today after MPs voted by more than the two-thirds majority required for an early poll. The House of Commons voted by a margin of 522 votes to 13 with Labour and the Lib Dems supporting the move. Treetop House run by The Sick Children’s Trust have launched the Big Chocolate Tea annual fundraiser to support families of sick children. The fundraising picnic invites people to get together over a cuppa and cake and to contribute £30 to support a family for one night in ‘Home from Home’ accommodation while their child undergoes treatment at Sheffield Children’s Hospital. Two and half thousand rubber ducks plunged down the river at Endcliffe Park for the annual charity Duck Race. The event, organised by the Friends of Porter Valley charity sees the ducks raise down the river, through the park and onto the playground. Sheffield United have been crowned League One champions after Bolton fell out of the running with a loss at Oldham. Six years since the Blades last tasted success and following a series of below par performances and managerial changes, former Blades player Chris Wilder has changed the team philosophy and clinched the title with his first year in charge. World Snooker promoter Barry Hearn says players have made “amazing improvement” over 40 years of the top international competition. Over seventeen days, 32 players will compete for the coveted World Snooker title at Sheffield’s Crucible Theatre with Hearn predicting “a huge number of century breaks”. The snooker championship returns to the Crucible Theatre and celebrates the 40th year of World Snooker in Sheffield. World Snooker promoter Barry Hearn has vowed the tournament will remain in the city for at least a further 10 years. Mark Selby lifted the trophy last year and is favourite again this year. Sheffield lapdancing club Spearmint Rhino has had it’s license renewed for a further twelve months despite over 100 formal objections being made to Sheffield Council. The licensing committee of Sheffield Council imposed new restrictions however including a requirement that club signage be concealed during daylight hours. Simon Thake reports for Sheffield Live!
The inaugural Sheffield LGBT+ awards will take place over Easter weekend at the Library Theatre. The awards ceremony was started Sheffield PRIDE to reward and recognise those who have worked to promote LGBT+ causes. The Light, Sheffield’s newest multi-screen cinema opens on The Moor this weekend with an opening bill including the highly anticipated Fast and Furious 8.
