North Sheffield residents demand Meadowhall transport improvements

A campaign has been launched by residents in the north of Sheffield to improve transport connections to Meadowhall shopping centre following recent cuts to bus routes. A petition has been started via the Sheffield Council website and is gathering support including the backing of Steve Wilson, councillor for East Ecclesfield ward. New park and ride opens in Tinsley

A new park and ride facility has been unveiled in Tinsley at IKEA Sheffield. The development was one of the conditions of planning approval for the furniture store and brings a total of eight park and ride facilities now available across the city. There is no cost to use the parking but commuters have to pay the price of the tram ride. Azz Mohammed reports for Sheffield Live!

Cab drivers encouraged to get regular health checks

Taxi drivers across Sheffield have been invited to take part in health checks this week at the Pakistan Muslim Centre to improve their health and well-being. The health awareness event was to encourage cab drivers to have regular health checks including blood pressure and heart rate to help facilitate early intervention if necessary. The event was organised by the Sheffield Taxi Trade Association and Sheffield Health and Social Care NHS Foundation Trust.

Cyclists complain of dangerous conditions on Carlisle Street

Carlisle Street, one of the quieter routes into Sheffield, is gaining such a reputation for dirt and dangerous conditions that some cyclists are now avoiding it altogether. The mile long road is frequently covered in mud and dirt from nearby commercial premises and Sheffield cyclists are calling on business to clean up their act. Icy roads bring upsurge in complaints

Icy conditions have led to a spike in complaints about newly resurfaced pavements which are proving to be especially slippery due to the tarmac used. A Streets Ahead spokesperson told Sheffield Live! “Although a rough surface can sometimes be advantageous during periods of snow and ice, we do have to maintain footways in order to ensure that, at any point in the year, they do not provide a trip hazard and they are compliant with national standards. The surfaces we apply are smoother than the old surfaces but they are standard materials which are used extensively across the country.” Baillor Jalloh reports.

Sheffield drivers to face 20mph city centre speed limit

A new 20mph per hour speed limit is to be introduced in Sheffield’s city centre following a Council-led public consultation. The aim is to cut speed and accidents as well as reducing pollution. Sheffield Council are planning for the new speed limit to come in to effect by the end of the year. Sheffield Live! reporter Azz Mohammed spoke to Councillors Jack Scott and Moya O Rourke.

Nine million drivers still use mobile phones at the wheel

A new report by the RAC suggests nine million drivers are using their mobile phones illegally whilst driving a vehicle. The report released reveals the number has fallen by a quarter compare to last year, but many are still texting or answering their phones despite tougher penalties being introduced during the year. Young bus users offered first time advice

As the new academic year kicks off, bus operator Stagecoach Yorkshire are providing tips and advice to help parents prepare their children for bus travel to and from school. The campaign is aimed at schoolchildren who will be catching buses for the first time on their own. Sheffield councillors welcome HS2 announcement

Lib Dem group leader on Sheffield Council, Shaffaq Mohammed, confirmed cross party support in Sheffield for the just announced HS2 route via Sheffield’s central train station. The high speed route will offer twice hourly journeys from central Sheffield to London. The news has been broadly welcomed by businesses and the public but there are some that oppose the decision with houses set to be lost in the process. Azz Mohammed reports for Sheffield Live!
