Government has announced that Sheffield city centre train station has been approved for connection to the high-speed rail route HS2. A new mobility scheme has been launched at the Moor Market that promises to make it easier for people with disability to get around the city centre. The scheme, called Mobile Sheffield, is funded by Sheffield’s Business Improvement District and Sheffield Council and includes a hire service for equipment such as mobility scooters, wheelchairs and walking frames. The Space for Cycling campaign bike ride took place at the weekend to promote cycle routes and cycle-friendly transport planning. Coordinated by Cycling UK, the family-oriented cycle event set off from Devonshire Green with hundreds of cyclists joining the Big Ride. Space for Cycling is a national campaign calling for investment in a network of cycle routes accessible to people of all ages and abilities. Local group Cycle Sheffield have called for Sheffield City Council to include cycling as a part of the transport infrastructure. Simon Thake reports for Sheffield Live!
Dozens of taxi drivers joined a demonstration outside the Town Hall against rules which allow drivers licensed by other local authorities to ply their trade in Sheffield. A convoy of drivers joined the protest from Atterclife, sounding their car horns and driving slowly to raise awareness of the issue. The Deregulation Act 2015 allows cross-border licensing of private hire and hackney carriage operators enabling drivers for Uber and some local companies to by-pass Sheffield Council’s licensing arrangements. Sheffield rail users voiced their anger at the latest rise in train fares at a demonstration outside Sheffield station. The protest was part of a countrywide action by commuters and other passengers following the announcement of fare rises averaging 2.3% for a single fare journey. President of Sheffield Chamber of Commerce Jillian Thomas, welcomed a report, which favoured the city centre option, for the HS2 train stop. The report also said it would save £768 million pounds on the overall budget of the project to go for Midland station.
An exhibition that is encouraging young people to take up careers in Manufacturing, Engineering and Aviation took place at Magna. One of the projects based in East Yorkshire has people aged between 11 and 18 years old building a plane which they will then learn to fly.
Travel continues to be disrupted for those using the Tram as rail replacement work takes place. People using the Blue route have to change transport at Shalesmoor while those catching the Yellow route have to change at The Cathedral.
A demonstration to highlight the plight of people trying to migrate to the Europe was held in Sheffield after the UK Government took the decision not to take part in any search and rescue operations in the Mediterranean when ships are in distress.
A photographic exhibition documenting the history of the Chinese community in Sheffield is being held at the Sheffield Cathedral. After a week the photographs will be kept in the Sheffield Archive for future generations to see.
