Bookies favourite Judd Trump faced a surprise challenge from world number 54 Rory McLeod in the World Snooker Championship 2017. Blades clinch League One title

Sheffield United have been crowned League One champions after Bolton fell out of the running with a loss at Oldham. Six years since the Blades last tasted success and following a series of below par performances and managerial changes, former Blades player Chris Wilder has changed the team philosophy and clinched the title with his first year in charge. World Snooker Championships return for 40th year

The snooker championship returns to the Crucible Theatre and celebrates the 40th year of World Snooker in Sheffield. World Snooker promoter Barry Hearn has vowed the tournament will remain in the city for at least a further 10 years. Mark Selby lifted the trophy last year and is favourite again this year. Sharp named League One Player of the Year

Sheffield United captain and top goal scorer Billy Sharp has been named English Football League One Player of the Year. Thirty-one year old Sharp was given the award ahead of team mate John Fleck and Scunthorpe’s Josh Morris. The Blades skipper was appointed captain when Chris Wilder took over in the summer and has bagged 23 league goals and led his side to automatic promotion. Simon Thake reports for Sheffield Live!

Sheffield United on the way up

Sheffield United are to return to the Championship after a six year absence following their 1-2 away victory at Northampton Town. The Blades needed a win to secure automatic promotion. Marc Richards put Northampton ahead, but Leon Clarke and John Fleck both scored to secure a win for the visitors. Jessica Ennis-Hill launches cancer charity appeal

Dame Jessica Ennis-Hill has launched an appeal on behalf of the Weston Park Cancer Charity to raise half a million pounds for modern refurbishments to the Sheffield hospital. The campaign ‘Beyond the Treatment’ includes providing wifi for patients and comfortable armchairs for relatives to ensure a comfortable stay at the Weston Park Hospital.
