Sheffield residents evacuated after gas leak

Residents in the Shiregreen area of Sheffield were awoken by police around 3am on Wednesday morning with a warning to evacuate after a gas leak in Hatfield House Lane. More than 20 people were told to leave their homes and taken to the nearby Concord Sports Centre. Cadent Gas, formerly National Grid Gas, said the leak in Hatfield House Lane at the junction with Belhouse Road was caused by damage to a gas main during street repair works. Hatfield House Lane and Winkley Terrace were closed as a result of the incident. Sheffield Live! reporter Baillor Jalloh spoke to some of the residents affected.

Free health checks offered at football clubs

Free health checks are to be offered to fans at Sheffield United’s Bramall Lane stadium in an initiative in partnership with Sheffield Hallam University & Weston Park Hospital. The third session took place prior to the Blades home game against Middlesborough with the club hoping it can encourage fans to adopt a healthier life. Hundreds join Sheffield trees rally

Hundreds took part in a rally in Sheffield city centre to protest against the felling of trees under Sheffield Council’s Streets Ahead programme. The tree felling works are part of a £2.2 billion private finance initiative (PFI) contract awarded to Amey to resurface the city’s roads and pavements over the next 25 years. Sheffield Council say all the trees that have been marked to be cut down are either dead, diseased, dying or dangerous but campaigners claim many healthy trees have been felled unnecessarily. Dozens take part in Tinsley charity race

Over 100 people took part in a 5k fun run, a 10K race, and a half marathon to raise money for breast, ovarian and prostate cancers and a charity supporting children with facial deformities. The event was held along the Tinsley Canal Towpath. Baillor Jalloh reports for Sheffield Live!

World Autism Awareness Week celebrations

World Autism Awareness Week is seven days in which the public are encouraged to take part in activities across the country to raise awareness about autism. Schools, organisations and individuals are encouraged to to hold events across the country to talk about autism and to raise funds. Sheffield Live! reporter Baillor Jalloh spoke to Grace Parry about living with autism.

English Institute of Sport hosts disability sports celebration

Sheffield Council and disability sport charity, Within Reach, celebrated seventeen years of partnership with festival of sport including wheelchair basketball, athletics and boccia. Over four hundred children and adults were joined by special appearances from public figures, including athletes and local councillors. Freedom riders rally at Sheffield station

South Yorkshire’s Freedom Riders organised a standing rally today outside Sheffield’s train station to demand railway bosses reinstate the elderly train concessions passes and to celebrate the campaign’s fourth anniversary. The group was formed in 2014, when free local train travel was taken away from elderly and disabled pass holders. Campaigners persuaded South Yorkshire Passenger Transport Executive to reinstate the concession. Baillor Jalloh reports for Sheffield Live!
