Tree campaigners have dismissed Sheffield Council’s claim that it will cost around half a million pounds to save the war memorial trees on Western Road. A Council report has assessed the financial impact of retaining the Western Road trees and making surrounding road and pavements safe, funds which the Council says would require it to re-prioritise spending on core services such as adult social care. Sheffield has been ranked as the second most stressed out city in the UK, according to a new survey released by insurance group AXA. According to the report 86 per cent of people who live in Sheffield say they are stressed at least some of the time during a typical week, the second highest score in the UK behind Cardiff. The research which forms part of AXA’s Stress Index, is based on a survey of 4000 adults in the UK. The report also found seven per cent of Sheffield residents feel stressed constantly, 41 per cent say their personal finances are the main cause of their stress, 37 per cent are worried about their health and 36 per cent are concerned about the health of their friends and family. The Children’s Book Awards took place at the Crucible, the only national book award where the winning titles are voted on by children. The event, into its 29th year, was attended by authors, children, parents, teachers and librarians. Sheffield Council has agreed for the Cherry Tree Pub on Carter Knowle Road to be listed as an Asset of Community Value, following a community-led campaign. The ruling puts on hold an application to knock the building down to build a new Co-op Food store. Pub owners Enterprise Inns are set to appeal the decision. Sheffield trees protester, Calvin Payne, has been given a suspended jail sentence for contempt of court after encouraging others to breach a court injunction. The injunction was granted to Sheffield Council to prevent obstruction of works involved in felling trees. Three people were in court over the incident initially but Payne was the only one sentenced after the judge dismissed one case and allowed another to be settled outside of court. Payne said he does not plan to break the high court injunction again. Azz Mohammed reports for Sheffield Live!
South Yorkshire Women’s Aid were the hosts for a women’s empowerment conference aiming to raise awareness of domestic abuse and the support services available for victims of violent relationships. The charity, which provides refuge and support for women facing violence in the home has launched a crowdfunding to maintain its service after loosing a £30,000 grant from Doncaster Council. A masked campaigner has climbed into the branches of the 150 year old Vernon Oak in Dore in a bid to save the tree from being felled. The oak, a familiar landmark on Vernon Road, is scheduled to be taken down by council contractors Amey as part of its Streets Ahead highway maintenance programme. The tree climbing campaigner says he is ready to stay on the tree for as long it takes to save the tree. Baillor Jalloh reports for Sheffield Live!
