Sheffield GP Surgery’s threatened

sign of devonshire green GP Surgery

GP surgery’s in Sheffield have said that they may have to close if funding cuts continue to be phased in over the next few years.

Cuts to the Minimum Income Practice Guarantee (MPIG) pose a real threat to the survival of up to five surgery’s in Sheffield.

Sheffield could see up to 13,000 patients being directly affected because of the withdrawal of MPIG funding.

The additional funding supports GP surgeries which serve populations with more complex and demanding health needs. The Government began withdrawing MPIG funding in April 2014 and plans to phase it out totally over the next seven years.

NHS England says 100 GP surgeries across the country are threatened by closure as a result, whilst the British Medical Association has warned that the number of surgeries seriously affected will be far higher.

Some practices under threat could lose more than £100 per patient per year, while others will lose £20 or £30 per patient.

Devonshire Green Medical Centre and the Hanover Medical Centre are two of the affected surgery’s in Sheffield. MPIG funding cuts could be in the region of £140,000 between them.

Staff are concerned that they may have to close. Dr Graham Pettinger, who works at both practices said: “At the moment, NHS England have a poor understanding in my view on the impact this is going to have on practices and the patients in Sheffield and across the country on a whole.” Dr. Pettinger continues “This is an extremely serious threat to our survival – if we are unable to find replacement money then the practice may have to close its door to the patients and the community.”

Paul Blomfield, MP for Sheffield Central, challenged Health Minister’s on this issue. He said: “Local GPs have expressed serious concerns to me about the consequences of this vital funding being withdrawn. The Health Minister’s answer to my question was shockingly complacent. He’s putting patients at risk and I’ll now be seeking a meeting with Ministers to press this issue further.”

Mr Blomfield added “Our local GP surgeries are the first port of call for most people who are unwell or have health difficulties. No-one wants to see service cutbacks having to be made which is why I’m raising this issue now before the situation gets critical. The Government should be talking to GP surgeries now and rethinking this decision.”

A spokesperson for the South Yorkshire and Bassetlaw area team of NHS England, said: We are committed to making sure patients have access to high quality GP services. The minimum practice income guarantee (MPIG) payment is being phased out to make funding for GP services more fair for everyone.” They continued “This is a national plan. Future funding for GP services will be based on the numbers of patients that a GP practice serves and the health needs of those patients. These changes started in April this year and will happen over a seven year period.”

“It’s me PG” interviews James Gillespie

Paul Gregory was joined in the studio during his Saturday morning “It’s me PG” show today by James Gillespie, who is appearing at The Viper Rooms tonight (12th April) in Sheffield.

Paul and James discussed James’ musical background: busking, appearing in a wide range of bands and now touring as a solo artist. Listen to the podcast of the 2nd hour of Paul’s show, containing the interview with James.

Paul comments:

James is an acoustic singer/ songwriter based in London. James brings a lot to his music – story telling from Folk, pain and passion from blues, hooks from pop and all with an indie edge.

James’ live performance is engaging, honest and mesmerising. His personality is charismatic and contagious.

After completing a very successful 25 date UK tour in Feb-March 2014, James will be returning to five of the best venues in London, Sheffield, Newcastle, Glasgow and Edinburgh, to blow the socks off his existing fans and new listeners once again.

He is already booked for 16 festivals, some along side Hudson Taylor and Toploader. He is warming up for Turin Brakes at an exclusive UK gig later this year.

James song ‘The Hills are Hers’ is being used as a soundtrack for a Redbull surf video for Jordy Smith. His new single is ‘Survive’ (both produced by Ken Nelson – Coldplay, Paulo Nutini, Gomez).

Jamie Phillips is the youngest person to hold the post of Assistant Conductor of the Hallé Orchestra.

He will conduct the Hallé next week for Tchaikovsky’s Symphony No.6 ‘Pathétiqué, “one of the great swansongs in musical history. From dark beginnings, full of foreboding, it proceeds via an uneasy waltz and a far-from triumphal march to a closure of near-unbearable poignancy.”

Jamie was interviewed today by Sheffield Live! presenter Dale Le Fevre on our Communities Live programme.

Business Live: avoiding twitter tangles; supporting independent restaurants

What do digital law and independent restaurants have in common?

Well, both topics were covered on our Business Live radio programme this morning.

Most businesses, social enterprises (and of course charities and public facing organisations) will agree that social media is an essential part of their marketing, communications or customer engagement strategy.

But high profile examples of organisations (large and small) getting things wrong on twitter or facebook – and paying a costly price whether legally or in loss of reputation and business, show that social media can be a minefield.

Digital Law is an interesting area; in some ways legislation is only just catching up with reality.

Peter Wright is the managing director of Digital Law UK and specialises in the law relating to websites, copyright, social media networks, intellectual property, data protection, privacy, security and encryption. Peter was a guest on our Business Live show this morning and helped to navigate through the legal minefield of the law relating to social media.

Also in the studio on today’s Business Live programme was Otto Damahi, owner of The Mediterranean Restaurant and Otto’s Restaurant in Sheffield.  Independent restaurants in Sheffield are warning customers to “use them or lose them” as they face competition from chains offering huge discounts. But local independents circulate more money into the Sheffield economy, buy more local food, and are often considerably less expensive for a meal out. Otto joined me to explain how his restaurants have managed to survive and thrive for so long and through a tough climate – by offering great value and building customer trust.

The show today also covered businesses news – RBS; equity investment into British firms; and the new State of Sheffield report.

You can listen to the show via the podcast (which will be available for 60 days from today 28.2.14) – access it here.
