A pro democracy student group is holding a peaceful protest in Hong Kong. We talked to two students, Cecilia and Kelvin, who are living and studying in Sheffield. We asked them how the situation is affecting them and their friends and families back in Hong Kong. The protests started when the Chinese Government announced that they were going to vet all candidates who were going to stand for election in Hong Kong.
Plans for Sheffield’s Olympic Legacy Park have been unveiled. Richard Caborn, former MP for Sheffield Central, revealed plans for Sheffield’s “Silicon Valley of Sports”. The Olympic Legacy Park is going to be built on the Don Valley Stadium site and will cost around 50 million pounds to build. The park will provide permanent home grounds for the Sheffield Sharks and The Sheffield Eagles.

Stoptober starts today. The campaign offers support to help people quit smoking. Evidence shows you are more likely to quit for good if you give up smoking for four weeks. Claire Holden, Service Manager, of Yorkshire Smoke Free Sheffield says that there are over 70 venues in the City that you can drop in to for advice. You can also phone their help lines on 0800 612 0011 free from landlines and 0330 660 1166 which is free on most mobiles.

Around 6,000 people took to the streets of Sheffield yesterday for the Great Yorkshire Run. Athlete, Ross Millington won the 10K, in thirty minutes and twenty seconds. Gemma Steel was the first woman to cross the finish line, for the second year in a row.

Green Top Circus was set up nearly 20 years ago and since then has been holding workshops for local people to learn how to do everything from juggling to aerial acrobatics.

The Sheffield Steelers are back on their home ice. The Steelers had to start off their season at ICE Sheffield because the ice at the Motorpoint Arena had melted due to a leak. Today was the first day the team have been able to train at their home venue. Sheffield Live! was there to see them and spoke to team owner Tony Smith.

The MADE Festival has been described as the “Glastonbury of Business,” attracting thousands of entrepreneurs and hundreds of speakers from all around the world to Sheffield. Musician and entrepreneur Levi Roots was one of the keynote speakers and spoke with Sheffield Live! about mentoring, passion, and lessons for young people.

The GMB has voted to go on strike for better working conditions here in the City. Peter Davies, Organiser for the Sheffield City Council branch of the GMB said they want better welfare conditions for the workers.
Sheffield Live! also approached Sheffield City Council and the Green Company but no one was available for an interview. However, they sent us a written statement which said “We are aware that GMB members have decided to take industrial action at The Green Company. Discussions are continuing with the union and its representatives about any concerns expressed by staff working for The Green Company.
The Green Company and GMB representatives will work together to resolve any issues that need addressing. We want to sort any issues out speedily. If strike action does occur we will do everything we can to minimise disruption and keep as many sites open as possible.”
We spoke to Peter Davis who explained why they have decided to take strike action.

Business leaders have launched a new investment project to help Sheffield’s economy. The Big Investment Project aims to bring new opportunities for people and businesses in South Yorkshire and the North Midlands. David Richards spoke to David Thurkettle, the incoming President of Sheffield Chamber of Commerce, at a special launch event at Sheffield’s Millennium Galleries, held in the run up to this year’s MADE: The Entrepreneur Festival.

Sheffield City Council are asking the public to reshape the care offered to people with learning disabilities in the City. The eight week consultation started last week and continues until 4th November. Councillor Mary Lea, the cabinet member for Health, Care and Independent Living spoke to Sheffield Live!
