Sheffield City Council has confirmed a Chinese investment deal that it once described as the best investment deal outside London has now been scrapped. The Labour-run local authority announced the 60-year agreement with the Sichuan Guodong construction firm in 2016. Sheffield Liberal Democrats leader Penny Baker told Sheffield Live! she is not surprised that the deal collapsed. Baillor Jalloh reports.
The ROKiT World Seniors Snooker competition is set to come to Sheffield for the first time with snooker legends Stephen Hendry, Jimmy White and Joe Johnson among 20 players from 16 countries competing for the trophy. Sheffield Council Deputy Leader Olivia Blake has said the city will bring forward a motion to recognise Palestine as an independent state. If passed, Sheffield could become the first UK city to recognise Palestinian statehood. Migration rights campaigners have welcomed the release of Hamid Baygi, a Sheffield resident who was recently detained and threatened with deportation to his home country Iran. Hamid Baygi has lived in the UK for nearly 50 years but was detained three weeks ago by immigration officers after he visited the Immigration Service at Vulcan House. A new Sheffield-based social enterprise aims to promote positive images of sub-Saharan Africa through a children’s book club, educational workshops, lectures, campaigns, festivals and the production of educational material. True Talk Africa launched in February and is encouraging children, including those of African heritage, to discover literature by African authors during their school holidays.
