The groups aim is to keep Britain in the European Union. Labour MEP for Yorkshire and Humber, Linda McAven was invited to Sheffield ink manufacturer, Diamond Dispersions, to find out how they operate inside the EU, and to launch the cross party campaign. She told Sheffield Live why she thinks Britain should stay in the EU, and the effect leaving Europe would have on local businesses.
Many local businesses met in Sheffield today for a HS2 summit, to discuss where the station for the high speed train should be. The current options are the original plan for a parkway type station at Meadowhall, or a city centre location on the old Victoria Station site. A new scheme in Sheffield called Crowditbuildit has launched to try and raise equity to build houses for young people. The University of Sheffield and Sheffield City Council are collaborating to explore whether new forms of crowdfunding can be used to re-develop brownfield sites across the city region. Hundreds of people gathered at the Sheffield Cathedral this afternoon for Harry Harpham’s funeral. The Labour MP for Sheffield Brightside and Hillsborough died from cancer at the age of 61. He was elected in May 2015.
Thousands of Junior Doctors have taken strike action across the country, affecting around three thousand appointments and operations. It’s the second strike over proposed new contracts. Negotiations have been taking place, but the Government and the British Medical Association have failed to reach an agreement. Picket lines have been outside all major hospitals across the country today.
Members of the Orgreave Truth and Justice campaign have attended a justice conference in London. The event at the Palace of Westminster was organised by Shadow Home Secretary, Andy Burnham, to highlight the current position of the campaign. A legal submission was handed in to the Government in December, asking Home Secretary Theresa May for a public inquiry into police conduct during the miners strike. The submission included testimonials from miners and their wives, and photos from what became known as ‘The Battle of Orgreave’ on the 18th of June 1984.
A twenty four year old man has been sentenced to life in prison this morning, for murdering forty four year old Cy Cooper in July last year. Paul Cain, of no fixed address in Sheffield must serve a minimum of twenty one years behind bars for the unprovoked killing of Mr Cooper at a house in Winkobank. The court heard Cain then set the house on fire to cover his tracks.
This week is Tinnitus Awareness Week, which aims to promote what tinnitus is, and tell more people about it. The British Tinnitus Association’s campaign, ‘Tea for tinnitus’ aims to get more people to have a drink and some cake, and discuss their issues with other people. Whilst around one in ten people get tinnitus, the BTA say many people don’t really know what it is.
Millions of people around the world have been celebrating the Chinese New Year. The special event is also known as the Lunar New Year which begins on the second new moon at the start of the year and ends on a full moon fifteen days later. It’s always named after one of twelve animals, and 2016 is the year of the monkey.

Can our communities’ pasts haunt us? Are there traces of ideas and ways of living from that past that are not simply done and gone, but could be brought to life again? And how does the past impress itself on us in the present?
Social Haunting: talking to the ghosts of our past is a new radio documentary about an ambitious research project that uses arts practice to explore the idea of “social haunting.” You can hear it at 9am on Wednesday 10th February, here on Sheffield Live.
A “social haunting” is said to occur in circumstances where there’s been repression or trouble in society and as a result, the past presses in to the present in ways that aren’t obviously visible.
“Ghosts” appear when the pressing concerns of the past have not been attended to.
The Working with Social Haunting project explored the usefulness of this concept with two groups of people, those involved in the cooperative movement in Lancashire, and in trade unionism in the former coalfields of South Yorkshire.
The 30 minute radio documentary Social Haunting: Talking To The Ghosts Of Our Past will be broadcast on Sheffield Live radio (93.2FM and online) on Wednesday, 10th February at 9am.
