Launch of the Covid memorial in Sheffield city centre

A permanent Covid memorial was unveiled in 2023 to remember those who lost their lives to the virus and to those who worked hard to keep people in Sheffield safe. The stainless steel sculpture representing a willow tree was chosen out of 14 entries after Sheffield City Council asked for submissions. The memorial was installed in Balm Green Gardens, near Barker’s Pool. Baillor Jalloh spoke to Paul Taylor, Sheffield Council’s Covid memorial project lead, and Sheffield Lord Mayor Sioned-Mair Richards.

Freedom of the City honour for Richard Caborn

Former UK sports minister and Sheffield Central MP Richard Caborn was honoured “Freedom of the City,” for dedicating his life to Sheffield and its people. Caborn was awarded the honour for his contribution to the advancement of sport in Sheffield, nationally and internationally, and for other services to the city. Cost of living and local transport key issues, says Abtisam Mohamed

Newly elected MP for Sheffield Central, Abtisam Mohamed, told Sheffield Live! the cost of living crisis and local transport were key concerns for Sheffielders. She also pledged to press for early implementation of Labour’s manifesto commitment to recognition of a Palestinian state. Shaffaq Mohammed: Lib Dems reflect on election defeats

Shaffaq Mohammed, leader of the Liberal Democrats on Sheffield, told Sheffield Live! the party will need to regroup after losing seats in the local elections. The Lib Dems lost Eccleshall to the Greens and lost Beighton to Labour, reducing their total number of seats on the Council to 27. Baillor Jalloh reports.

Greens gain Eccleshall from Lib Dems

Peter Gilbert, the Green Party candidate for Eccleshall, defeated incumbent Liberal Democrat councillor Roger Davison. The Greens lost Walkley to Labour, leaving their total number of councillors unchanged at 14. Baillor Jalloh reports for Sheffield Live!

University centre launches new equity and inclusion scheme

The Centre for Equity & Inclusion at the University of Sheffield has launched a new programme for post-graduate researchers of minority backgrounds. The scheme offers training workshops, mental health and wellbeing support, and mentoring opportunities. Now in its second year, the research hub seeks to enhance the university experience for post-graduates of colour, while challenging racism within and beyond higher education. End of an era for Wilko stores

Wilko shops are to close across the UK tis weekend after the company went into administreation in August and failed to find a buyer. Employees at the high street chain’s store in Sheffield spoke to Sheffield Live! of their disappointment, describing the closure as “the end of an era”. Baillor Jalloh reports.

Chilean community mark 50th anniversary of military coup

The brutal coup d’etat in Chile on 11 September 1973 left thousands dead, many more in exile, and overthrew Salvador Allende’s democratically-elected government. Sheffield is among the cities that gave sanctuary to Chilean refugees. The Chilean community and friends held a march and rally on Saturday. Sheffield Live! reporter Steve Buckley spoke to organiser Maria Vasquez-Aguilar of the Chile Solidarity Network Sheffield.

Motion Exercise launch digital wellbeing platform

Sheffield based social enterprise, Motion Exercise CIC, has launched a new digital platform for activity coordinators working with care home residents. With the support of Sheffield City Trust the company has launched Motion Wellbeing designed to enhance physical and mental wellbeing through exercise.
