A trial scheme to increase the amount of food waste recycled in Sheffield has started this week with over 8000 households taking part in the 12-week scheme. Sheffield Council say the aim is to reduce the amount of food waste ending up in black bins. Sheffield pub owner, Jacqui Hanson, is among many calling on the government to do more to support pub businesses at risk of going out of business in the face of soaring energy prices. Hanson, owner, of the Rose House pub in Walkley, told Sheffield Live! that electricity bills have already risen sharply and she doubted the business can survive without government support. Jake Rideout of Sheffield has won this years Peak District Highland Games after a fierce competition at the weekend event held in Matlock. The games featured seasoned competitors including two times previous Peak District Highland Games champion, Scott Mark Litchfield. Rideout went into the competition having previously won Yorkshire’s Strongest Man in 2021. Baillor Jalloh reports.
Sheffield Council has decided not to oppose the Grade II listing of the former John Lewis building at Barker’s Pool having previously written to government saying this would limit development. Councillor Shaffaq Mohammed, leader of Sheffield Liberal Democrats, told Sheffield Live! he remained opposed to the listing. Baillor Jalloh reports.
Sheffield’s Eurovision bid team are well prepared to show what the city can offer, following shortlisting to host the 2023 Eurovision song contest. The six other cities shortlisted to host the event in May next year are Leeds, Birmingham, Glasgow, Liverpool, Manchester and Newcastle. Twenty cities expressed an interest but only seven were shortlisted. Sheffield Mind has joined over 70 charities calling on the government to do more to support struggling families in the face of the cost of living crisis. Rising food prices have pushed UK inflation to over 10% for the first time since the early 80s with prices continuing to rise at their fastest rate for more than four decades. The first cohort of students graduating from Barnsley’s new Esports Level 3 qualification (equivalent to one A Level) have received their results. The college is one of the trailblazing schools to teach the new Esports course and has developed a suite of facilities including an Esports arena and tailored classroom. Hundreds of people took part in a weekend rally in Sheffield city centre, to stand in solidarity with rail workers. The rally, organised by the National Union of Rail, Maritime and Transport Workers (RMT), aimed at highlighting the ongoing dispute between rail workers and employer, Network Rail. On Thursday and Saturday, half of UK’s train services were on halt as over 45,000 train employees walked out in the row over pay, jobs and conditions. Baillor Jalloh reports for Sheffield Live!
