College campaign promotes voter registration

The Sheffield College are encouraging students and young people to register to vote in the General Election ahead of the deadline on Monday 22 May. The College have loaned a portable voting booth from Sheffield Council to raise student awareness of elections and voter registration. It is touring college campuses before the voting registration deadline following a launch at the Olive Grove campus off East Bank Road. IT experts warn on cyber attack risks

IT specialists are advising homes and businesses to review their cyber security following the malware attack that hit the NHS and other organisations at the weekend. The cyber attack, known as ransomware, left users locked out of their computers and requested a ransom payment to unlock encrypted data. Fu beats Robertson in tight snooker drama

Aussie snooker star Neil Robertson was edged out of the World Championship in a closely fought battle with Marco Fu. Before the match Robertson spoke to Sheffield Live! about his Aussie temperament, the buzz of The Crucible and which players he believes pose the strongest challenge. Election campaigning begins as MPs back snap poll

Theresa May’s plan for a general election was confirmed today after MPs voted by more than the two-thirds majority required for an early poll. The House of Commons voted by a margin of 522 votes to 13 with Labour and the Lib Dems supporting the move. Sheffield Live! reporter spoke to Dr Andy Price, head of politics at Sheffield Hallam University.

Two million employees get a pay rise

Two million workers are set to benefit from the rise of the National Living Wage which increases from £7.20 an hour to £7.50 on 1st April. The rise will benefit employees who are aged 25 and above and comes into place 12 months after the benchmark was first established. The National Minimum Wage, which began in 1999 and now covers workers aged 16 to 24 and apprentices, is also rising by 5p or 10p an hour depending on age. Baillor Jalloh reports for Sheffield Live!

Kell Brook set to defend welterweight title

Kell Brook is set to defend his IBF Welterweight world title against undefeated American boxer Errol Spence, with the fight set to take place in Sheffield at Bramall Lane on 27 May. Brook’s last fight was against middleweight Gennady Golovkin where he lost in the fifth round after moving up two divisions. Spence turned professional after losing in the quarter finals in the London Olympics 2012. Azz Mohammed reports for Sheffield Live!

Sheffield campaigners join Save Our NHS march

NHS workers, campaigners and union representatives travelled to London to join a protest march against austerity measures in the health service. Organisers said that “at least 250,000” people took part in the Save Our NHS march, which began in Tavistock Square and ended in Westminster. Protesters sought to draw attention to plans which could see cut see cut backs in nearly two thirds of hospital services in England. Simon Thake reports for Sheffield Live!
