Sally Goldsmith, has created songs and poems from the words of ‘ordinary’ local people for her new work ‘Out of the Ordinary’. The Sheffield poet, singer and songwriter was performing at Sheffield’s Festival of the Mind and has a published a new book of the same title. Baillor Jalloh reports for Sheffield Live!
The Sheffield Children’s Centre is appealing for contributions, ahead of their 25th anniversary, to help revamp their facilities for local children. The pioneering, co-operatively run centre on Shoreham Street looks after children of all ages and backgrounds, and it also hosts community events. Built in the 1990s, the Centre will be celebrating 25 years in 2017, and is aiming to renew its indoors and outdoors environment. Nether Edge Festival got under way with a ‘yarnstorming’ session as local artist Lynn Carruthers led Nether Edge locals through the streets to decorate the trees with woollen patterns. The family festival, celebrating the community of Nether Edge, is now in its second year and features events ranging from ceildhis to cricket matches, wildlife talks and musical performance. Local artist and comedian Chella Quint is hosting a series of workshops on wind turbines as part of Sheffield’s Festival of the Mind. The festival is a celebration of ideas, culture and collaboration between academics and professionals from Sheffield’s cultural, creative and digital industries. The activities and events are free and open to the public. Quint, who has been working in collaboration with Sheffield University, is a passionate turbine spotter. Sheffield’s ‘Off the Shelf’ literature festival celebrates its 25th anniversary this autumn. Starting in October, this year’s festival programme is wide ranging, with over 200 events for all ages and described by organisers as “bursting with innovation, creativity, authenticity and life”. Sheffield Live! reporter Shamman Freeman-Powell met with Off the Shelf organisers and authors and heard of taste of what’s in store.
South Yorkshire police hope that joint campaigns with Europe on issues such as modern slavery alongside cooperation on International arrest warrants will continue but say that at the moment how that will happen is unclear.
President of Sheffield Chamber of Commerce Jillian Thomas, welcomed a report, which favoured the city centre option, for the HS2 train stop. The report also said it would save £768 million pounds on the overall budget of the project to go for Midland station.
The turnout for Sheffield was 67.34% which is higher then any recent election but lower than the national average of 72%. Sheffield Live! Mickey Conn reports live from the count.
The counting of the votes came to a stop in Sheffield for a moments silence to remember Yorkshire MP Jo Cox.
Councillor Jack Scott told Sheffield Live! that no matter what the result it is important to bring the people of Sheffield back together and to heal divisions exposed in our city.
