Festival of words prepares for 25th year in Sheffield

Sheffield’s ‘Off the Shelf’ literature festival celebrates its 25th anniversary this autumn. Starting in October, this year’s festival programme is wide ranging, with over 200 events for all ages and described by organisers as “bursting with innovation, creativity, authenticity and life”. Sheffield Live! reporter Shamman Freeman-Powell met with Off the Shelf organisers and authors and heard of taste of what’s in store.

Police force on Brexit

South Yorkshire police hope that joint campaigns with Europe on issues such as modern slavery alongside cooperation on International arrest warrants will continue but say that at the moment how that will happen is unclear.

HS2 reported to be coming in to City Centre

President of Sheffield Chamber of Commerce Jillian Thomas, welcomed a report, which favoured the city centre option, for the HS2 train stop. The report also said it would save £768 million pounds on the overall budget of the project to go for Midland station.

Women of Steel celebrated

The Women of Steel statue has been unveiled in Sheffield City centre. The statue honors and commemorates the work that women did during both world wars to keep the steel industry going.

Local teacher and Magistrate Iffat Hameed has been awarded an MBE, in Queen’s Birthday Honours List. She has been honoured for her work in education within the city.
