The Big Fun Run came to Rother Valley Country Park today. People could run, jog or walk the five kilometer route which went around the lake. The run was un-timed, so people could get around at their own leisure. Most people were raising money for charities such as MacMillan, Alzheimers Research UK and Cancer Research.
A new mountain bike trail has been opened at Lady Cannings Plantation. The trail is for beginners but there is also plenty there for the more experienced riders. The trail has been funded by a crowdfunding scheme.
Ponds Forge is going through a major refurb. The new gym will open in the autumn but meanwhile a temporary facility with over 90 machines is still available at the venue.
Market traders in the new Moor market are going to get a 50% reduction in rent in the hope that the new prices will encourage more people to set up stalls. Family days and other activities are also going to be held during the summer to try and attract more people to the area. The old Castle Market is currently been knocked down. The number of shoppers expected at the market has never been achieved and because of the recession many stall holders have had to close down.

Sheffield Pride is taking place at the Sheffield Students’ Union at the University of Sheffield. the festival will have various activities, music, and food and drink . Pride is hoping to re start the local gay scene in Sheffield.
Samuel Holberry was the leader of the Chartists movement here in Sheffield. They fought for the right of the working class to have a vote and for the vote to be a secret ballot amongst other things. Holberry was arrested and died in prison for treason 173 years ago this week.
The Battle of Orgreave took place 31 years ago during the miners strike and a rally is being held to remember the event. The IPCC recently unannounced that it would not be investigating what happened on 18 June 1984.The Orgreave Peace and Justice campaign have said they are not surprised by the decision and is now calling for a full public inquiry in to the events.
Trevor Hicks told the Hillsborough inquest how he went between both of his daughters trying to resuscitate them. He also said he felt “dreadful” after choosing to go to the Northern General with Vicki, leaving Sarah behind thinking she would be in the next Ambulance. Both his daughters Sarah 19 and Victoria 15 died on the 15 April 1989 at Sheffield Wednesday Football Ground. They were two of Ninety-six Liverpool fans who were fatally injured when Liverpool played Nottingham Forest FA Cup semi-final.
