Tent City organiser welcomes progress on homelessness

Tent City organiser, Anthony Cunningham, told Sheffield Live! services for the homeless have improved since the closure of the Tent City camp at Park Hill flats. The Tent City campaign put the focus on support for rough sleepers by providing a temporary camp with food, water and amenities. Now the organisers are launching a sunday morning breakfast club for the homeless and have welcomed the cooperation and support of Sheffield Council. Sheffield Live! reporter Azz Mohammed spoke to Anthony Cunningham and Christopher Thompson.

Sheffield students prepare for NUS elections

Sheffield student candidates are gearing up for election campaigning to the National Union of Students (NUS) Executive Committee and other positions. The national student body represents students’ interests and provides advice and support on issues such as finance and how to gain post-study employment. Sheffield Live! reporter Azz Mohammed spoke to current NUS executive member Hassan El Zafar.

Police and Hallam Union tackle hate crime

South Yorkshire Police and Sheffield Hallam Students’ Union have teamed up to tackle hate crime in the city. Students and university staff are often reluctant to call in the police when confronted with hate crime. Hallam Union is working with the police to tackle these issues and to help police to communicate with students and staff where necessary. Azz Mohammed reports for Sheffield Live!

Thousands of children on scout waiting list

The Scout Organisation have reported a waiting list of over 51,000 children due to a shortage of adult volunteers. Chief Scout Bear Grylls said it was a “challenge” to recruit more adult volunteers to support youngsters wanting to become Scouts, Beavers, Cubs or Explorers. Circus School offers a taste of the big top

Sheffield youngsters have been given the opportunity to hone their juggling, unicycle and trapeze skills at Greentop Circus during the Easter holiday. The Sheffield-based community circus provides young people with access to specialist training and facilities to give them an insight into circus art and life under the big top. Job opportunities with Social Enterprise Exchange

Social Enterprise Exchange is a comprehensive programme of social enterprise support contributing to jobs, growth and social inclusion across the Sheffield City Region. It is delivered by a community-based consortium in collaboration with Sheffield City Region Growth Hub and is part funded by the European Regional Development Fund 2014 – 2020. Social Enterprise Exchange will promote social entrepreneurship, through awareness raising events, knowledge exchange and peer networking; it will provide support for start-ups, including hot-desks, start-up grants and mentoring; and it will offer specialist enterprise support for existing social enterprises to grow and to develop new products and services.

We are seeking applications for two new Social Enterprise Exchange posts at Sheffield Live!:

Enterprise Advisor

The successful candidate will be a marketing and communications specialist with previous experience of providing business support and extensive knowledge of social enterprise. The postholder will be responsible for providing one-to-one and group support to social enterprises supported through the Social Enterprise Exchange programme and will provide strategic marketing and communications support for the programme and for Sheffield Live!

Social Enterprise Reporter

We are seeking to recruit a freelance journalist with an interest in business and social enterprise to join the Sheffield Live news team. The person appointed will have previous experience in print and video journalism including video editing skills using Adobe Premiere. The postholder will be responsible for collecting social enterprise case stories and for reporting on topical issues relating to business and social enterprise.

Prince Andrew opens new manufacturing research centre

The Duke of York, with the aid of a robotic arm, has officially opened Factory 2050, a new Sheffield University manufacturing research centre. The centre uses digital technologies to enable rapid product design and flexible component manufacture to test new production methods. The launch event included talks by key figures from the Advanced Manufacturing Research Centre (AMRC) and industrial partners including the University of Sheffield and McLaren. Sheffield cyclists seek city improvements

Russell’s Bicycle Shed played host to a cycling showcase at Sheaf Square to promote and encourage cycling in Sheffield. Cyclists are hoping for further improvement in cycling amenities as part of economic planning behind the The Outdoor City brand launched in 2015. A study by Sheffield Hallam University has found outdoor recreation is generating more than £53m for the city every year. Simon Thake reports for Sheffield Live!

Sharp named League One Player of the Year

Sheffield United captain and top goal scorer Billy Sharp has been named English Football League One Player of the Year. Thirty-one year old Sharp was given the award ahead of team mate John Fleck and Scunthorpe’s Josh Morris. The Blades skipper was appointed captain when Chris Wilder took over in the summer and has bagged 23 league goals and led his side to automatic promotion. Simon Thake reports for Sheffield Live!
