Environmental campaigners arrived at Sheffield rail station carrying a giant electrical plug on a journey from Bedford having made several stops en route. They are calling on the Government to reverse a decision in July to cancel plans to electrify the Midland Mainline beyond Kettering, a move which would have reduced air pollution and carbon emissions. Liesje Dusausay, chief executive of Sparkle Sheffield, the autism charity, has accused Sheffield Council of “abusing” children with special educational needs by failing to provide the right educational environment. Dusausay told Sheffield Live! that many children are still waiting confirmation of their school placements while others are so distressed at their current schools that they are self-harming. Sheffield Council released a statement last week admitting mistakes had been made which the authority said it “truly” regretted. Hundreds of people gathered at Barker’s Pool on Wednesday for a vigil and demonstration in support of thousands of Rohingya muslims who have been killed or forced to flee their homes in Myanmar. Sheffield councillors and activists are calling for the Nobel Laureate and Burmese leader Aung San Suu Kyi to be stripped of her Freedom of the City over the lack of action to protect Myanmar’s muslim minority. According to the United Nations, an estimated 164,000 Rohingya muslims have fled Myanmar’s Rakhine State since violence erupted two weeks ago, many taking to the sea in fishing boats to reach Bangladesh. Sheffield Drug and Alcohol Coordination Team is sponsoring Recovery Month in September to increase awareness of substance use addiction and to celebrate recovery. Hundreds of people who are, or have been affected by addiction will come together to assist those struggling with substance use to find help and support. As the new academic year kicks off, bus operator Stagecoach Yorkshire are providing tips and advice to help parents prepare their children for bus travel to and from school. The campaign is aimed at schoolchildren who will be catching buses for the first time on their own.
